The Good Jobs, Green Jobs National Conference in Washington D.C. was held as an Alliance of Leading Environmental Groups and National Labor Unions to join forces for good jobs that are environmentally friendly in the United States.
Teamster President Jim Hoffa spoke at the Good Jobs, Green Jobs national conference held in Washington D.C. earlier this month about the importance of the green economy. Hoffa made a vow to create more green jobs along with environmental and labor allies. In his statement Hoffa expressed the desire for job creation that does not harm the workers
There are over 1.4 million Teamsters Union members working across the global supply chain in airlines, rail, trucking, package deliver, ports, warehouses, delivery, recycling and waste. According to Hoffa, Teamsters have manned the forefront of America’s green economy.
As an example, Hoff spoke of how the Teamsters and environmental partners got the Port of Los Angeles to make the trucking companies replace old and dirty diesel trucks, making the Port of L.A. a model for the rest of the ports in America.
Hoffa spoke of how the hardware for environmental products must be union-made in America, not imported from China. He specifically mentioned solar panels, generators for hydroelectric power and turbines for wind power.
Hoffa was on a keynote panel that also included Senator Sherrod Brown and Jarel Bernstein, the chief economist and the economic policy advisor to VP Biden.
Hoffa said that during the past eight years people were told that pollution was part of keeping jobs in the United States. He went on to say that big corporations were allowed to pollute, but they sent jobs overseas anyway and the economy went into the toilet. The result was that the middle class was destroyed. The environment is near disaster.
The goal to bring jobs back to America is a good one. It is time to renew that American ingenuity that the country is based on to put Americans back to work in good paying jobs instead of shipping jobs overseas.
It is not just the Union workers who feel the pinch. American workers many market segments have been displaced by the economy as companies find way to cut costs by letting full time workers go and replace them with low paid part time employees without benefits.
People and government are more aware of the importance of the environment, called the “green movement.
The Green movement can help to clean up the environment and create new jobs. As Jim Hoffa mentioned, new equipment will need to be installed as part of the movement to clean up the environment. The equipment should be made and installed by Americans.
