Home Remedies for Puffy Eyes

It’s not a pretty sight to be greeted by puffy eyes in the morning. Whether you have puffy eyes from allergies, from crying the night before, or due to hormonal fluctuations, puffiness under the eyes is not a pretty site. Fortunately, there are some ways to get rid of puffy eyes or at least make them look more acceptable before you head out the door to greet the world. Here are some home remedies for puffy eyes.

Home remedies for puffy eyes: Cold is your friend

When it comes to getting rid of puffy eyes, a cold pack can work wonders. If you don’t have a cold pack, a bag of frozen vegetables is a good substitute. Simply lie down on the bed with your head propped up to encourage drainage of the undereye fluid and place the bag of cold vegetables over your eyes. Relax for fifteen minutes. The cold from the frozen pack should reduce the swelling.

Home remedies for puffy eyes: Preparation H

Preparation H isn’t just for hemorrhoids anymore. Just as this trusty product can reduce the swelling associated with hemorrhoids, it can also reduce puffy eyes. Apply a thin coat of Preparation H under your eyes and allow it to work its magic while you get ready for work. You’ll want to remove it before you leave as it has a faint odor and tends to be sticky.

Home remedies for puffy eyes: Makeup

Now that you’ve use cold and hemorrhoid cream to reduce the puffiness, finish up by applying a generous layer of concealer around your eyes. Follow up with a light layer of translucent powder. Blend well and apply your normal eye makeup. This isn’t a good day to skip eye makeup since bare eyes will make the puffiness appear more obvious. Avoid wearing a frosted shade of eye shadow. Instead, stick with a matte shadow in a neutral color such as brown or charcoal gray. It can also help to put on a bright lipstick to draw attention away from the puffiness.

Home remedies for puffy eyes: Water

Now that the puffiness under your eyes is less obvious, drink extra water throughout the day to further flush out the retained fluid. Minimize your salt intake as much as possible. As the day goes on, the puffiness should gradually decrease. When you go home to sleep, sleep with your head elevated. This can help to prevent future problems.

If you experience recurrent puffiness under the eyes for no obvious reason, schedule an appointment with your doctor as under eye fluid retention can occasionally be caused by medical problems.
