Just because the global economy is crashing, it doesn’t mean everything about it is bad. Even in a bad global economy, good things still come from it. In fact, to some extent, as far as the planet goes, having a bad global economy can be better for it and here’s why.
Bad Economy = Less Pollution – When the global economy goes bad, people are laid off and factories close. Because of this, less pollution is pumped into the air, especially in countries like China, and the air becomes cleaner. In southern China, cement factories are being blamed for choking pollution that is in the air around all major Chinese cities. This pollution gets dispersed in the air and ends up in places as far away as Washington DC and Los Angeles. Much of the world’s pollution comes from China and the USA (the two largest polluters in the world). If these countries aren’t producing as many products because of the bad global economy, we all benefit, as the air we breath is cleaner.
Bad Economy is Good For Sharks – One of the things I’m constantly fighting against is the production of shark fin soup. Here in Asia, a lot of shark fin soup is consumed as it’s a delicacy the Chinese and other Asian people enjoy. Shark fin soup is usually served on what Asians call a ‘Chinese table’. That’s the food you order in Asian restaurants that is served in big platters and put on a moveable circular section in the middle of the table, and it’s expensive. When the economy is bad, Chinese table restaurants suffer as people start to eat cheaper food. One Chinese table restaurant owner I just saw being interviewed on TV, said his Chinese table orders are down by 50%. Bad for the restaurant owner, but excellent news for sharks. With less Chinese tables being ordered, the demand for shark fin soup is down and what restaurants will pay for shark fin is also down. I’m sure the sharks are happy about the bad global economy.
Bad Economy Will Give The USA Less Power Over Other Countries – The bad global economy has been bad for almost every country, but worse for the USA than almost anywhere else. Because Americans don’t save (they have the lowest saving rate of any developed country), it will also take the American economy longer to bounce back than anywhere else. More money means more power for the US. With less money (and with a future that does not look good for the US) this technically means that the power will eventually pass into the hands of countries like the Chinese, and to more European countries. This can only be a good thing as, in the past, the US has perpetrated terrible atrocities because of its enormous power (invasion of Iraq, Vietnam War, Korean War, the US’ unlimited support of Israel etc). With a less powerful United States, other countries will be able to move in and take up the reins of power. I, for one, am looking forward to it.
In a Bad Economy, People Drive Less – When times are bad, people try to save money. One of the ways people try to save money is by walking or taking public transportation instead of driving. This equates to less gasoline used, so less pollution. It also gives less control (and less money) to OPEC, who has been trying for months to keep gasoline prices high, to no avail. When people don’t drive, there’s less demand, and gas prices fall.
In a Bad Economy, Food Prices Usually Fall – Food prices usually fall in a bad economy for two reasons. Gas prices fall, so costs of producing and transporting food is cheaper. The second reason is people will buy less expensive food rather than expensive food, so even the expensive brands have to bring their prices down. In Thailand, where I live, the price of milk has come down by 20 cents in the last month, kale (a vegetable I buy every day for my rabbits) has come down by almost 50%, and even products imported from the US and UK have fallen in price. Imported foods are more expensive than other foods and most people aren’t willing to pay what they were willing to pay when the economy was good. Lower food prices are good for everybody.
Yes, there are bad things that come from a bad economy. For some people who are in secure jobs though, like me, the bad economy has actually been a good thing for all the above reasons and more.
