From the time I was six month pregnant to the time of giving birth my doctor was 100% sure we were having us a little girl. Oh my Lord, a little girl is every woman’s dream especially when it came to picking out a great name. My girl name was Jordan Anne, and I didn’t really have a long process to how I went about picking it out, it just really came to my mind. Now that I had my girl name picked out and the doctors “guarantee” I wasn’t even going to worry about boys names. Why would I even have to if I was going to have me a girl, right? Yea, first advice, don’t ever listen to a crazy old doctor for guarantees!
It was pushing time and everyone in the birthing room was saying “come on Jordan Anne, come on out” and as she made her amazing appearance to this world the doctor says “IT’S A BOY!”. Yes, you read right I didn’t have a girl, I had a boy! Don’t get me wrong, I was thrilled and just very grateful that my baby was healthy but the my mind went into uh-oh mode because I never picked out a name for a boy. Yes, I could of used Jordan for him, but I never liked that name for boys so I had tho think very quick when they came to me with the birth certificate and asked me what I would like to name my son.
In many years of being involved deeply into my religion I always loved the biblical name Gabriel. How could you not love the name of the angel that told Mary she was going to have a baby? So, there is was my first name choice was going to be Gabriel and we could call him Gabe. Now sticking with tradition of America I had to pick out a middle name. Wasn’t it enough for me to have my mind pop out the first name really quick, now I have to come up with a second one, just my luck, but then it hit me like a ton of bricks.
My best friend and I talked all the time that we would always name our kids after one another. Her and I have been friends since we were five and we always thought it was a cute idea to keep our kids involved in our life long friendship. Seeing that I was going to use Anne for the girls middle name which was my best friends middle name as well I started thinking of possibilities of good boy middle names that would work her name into it and there it was. Her maiden name was perfect, Hunter. Add my my husbands and my last name Stepp and we have us a new little boy named Gabriel Hunter Stepp and I did it all in less then 10 minutes!
Now, me and my husband are expecting our second child due in June of this year and we have seriously sat down with both pen and paper and made a list of both boy and girl names! We aren’t taking any chances this time and we wanted to be completely prepared.
If we have a girl we are going with Maley Mae. I first chose the name Maddison, however I have a very close cousin named Maddison and I knew we couldn’t go with that because it is to close in the family so I stuck with the letter M and started to think of names that started with that. However, nothing came to mind until my mother mentioned the name Bailey. I sounded out Bailey with a M instead and came up with a great word Maley. I wanted to stick with a really southern sounding name for the middle and that is how I came up with Mae.
Now if we have a boy we wanted to stick with another biblical name. Since my son is really big into football Eli came to mind. If you don’t know much about football that is Eli Manning to y’all. However Eli isn’t a bible name so I thought for a second and came up with Elijah. Perfect and now what for a middle name. I had three choices to pick from, David, Thomas, and I save the other option for last. I wanted to maybe go with David because that is the first name of my late brother and the middle name of my late father. It would incorporate them into this child. I also liked Thomas but then to figure out Elijah Thomas, uh-oh I am not going to have him called ET. Now the last choice came to mind when I thought of Gabe’s middle name Hunter. I thought if we have a Hunter in the house it would be cute to have a Fisher. So there it was Elijah Fisher Stepp, Eli for short!
Only 5 months to go and we will find out if Maley or Eli will grace our household! I am super excited. Picking out children’s names are a great joy but have to be very well thought of because they are going to be stuck with this name for the rest of their lives. Don’t give them something that may sound funny or cute to you now, because you know kids can be cruel.
