Homemade bread is pretty easy to make. There is nothing like it. You can’t buy it in the store to taste quite as good as it comes right out of your oven.
Here is what you need to make homemade bread:
1 package of your favorite brand of all purpose flour (5 pounds)
1 tablespoon of sugar
1 tablespoon of salt
1 tablespoon of Crisco shortening
1 cup of milk
1 package of yeast
3 cups of boiling water
Before you do anything you will need to activate the yeast. Open the pack of yeast and put it in a cup. Add about 4 ounces of very warm water to the cup and about a quarter of a teaspoon of sugar to the mix and set it aside. Make sure the water is warm but not hot. Hot water will will kill the yeast. Now set it aside until you need it. The yeast will feed on the sugar and grow while you are preparing the ingredients.
Now in a very large mixing bowl add the boiling water, Crisco, salt and sugar. Stir them up until the Crisco melts. Next you will add the milk. When the mixture has cooled so that it isn’t really hot, you can then add the yeast mixture to it and stir it so that the yeast is incorporated in the big bowl.
Next you will open the bag of flour and add 1 cup at a time to the liquid. Keep adding the flour until you cannot stir it anymore. Then start working it with your hands. Add enough flour where you can work it without it sticking to your hands, but don’t add so much that it becomes too stiff. You have added enough flour when it no longer sticks to your hands. The dough will be soft and doughy when it is the right consistency.
Next remove the dough from the bowl and knead it on your counter top or cutting board. Knead the dough between 5 and 7 minutes. Before putting the bread dough back in the bowl, wash the bowl so that it is clean. Dry the bowl, and then grease it with butter or margarine. Place the bread dough back in the bowl and now cover it with a dish towel and place in a warm place that is between 80 and 85 degrees. Watch the dough and when it has doubled in size punch the dough down and knead it right in the bowl for a few minutes.
Now divide the dough and place it into 2 bread loaf pans. Cover the pans and let the dough raise one more time before baking. Once the dough has raised up again pop them in a 400 degree oven and bake for about 20 minutes. The top of the bread will be a nice golden brown. The sides of the bread will have come away from the loaf pan. To check the middle of the bread stick a knife into the middle of the bread and it will come back clean.
Once the bread is done, let the bread stand in the pan for about 10 minutes and then transfer onto a plate and slice. Serve with butter. Enjoy!
