As you progress through the Fallout 3 story arc, you’ll eventually find yourself in Tranquility Lane. This is the setting for Chapter 6, “Tranquility Lane.”
This quest presents you with a moral conundrum. You need to escape the bizarre simulation, and your captor (Betty, or Dr. Braun) wants you to do some evil stuff in order to leave.
If you’re playing Fallout 3 as an Evil character, that should be no problem. If, however, you’re aiming for Good Karma, you might think twice about slaughtering all of the residents of this quaint little town.
Well here’s an alternative, taken from this complete walkthrough of Chapter 6, Tranquility Lane at Nerds at Play.
Getting to Tranquility Lane and Beginning Chapter 6
First, you’ll need to find Vault 112 and enter Tranquility Lane.
In Chapter 5, you discover that you’re father has left the vault to continue work on Project Purity – a project to purify the contaminated water in the D.C. area. After checking in at Rivet City, he went to the Jefferson War Memorial – the old project headquarters.
After following his trail to the Jefferson War Memorial, you learn that he’s headed off in search of a Dr. Braun and a GECK (Garden of Eden Creation Kit) in Vault 112. Upon learning this information, a quest marker should appear on your map pointing you to Vault 112.
The Vault is located underneath Smith Casey’s garage. It’s a small building in the Southwest Quadrant of the Capital Wasteland area. It’s a tad to the east of Girdershade and to the west of Paradise Falls. Find it, head inside, and go downstairs to enter the vault.
Leaving Tranquility Lane
Once you find your way into Tranquility Lane, you’ll need to find a way out. You could play Betty’s game, kill a bunch of people, and incur some bad karma… or use the failsafe terminal.
One of the residents (Old Lady Dithers) will explain to you that Dr. Braun built a failsafe terminal into the simulation. If you can access it, you should be able to end the simulation.
Her clues lead you to the Abandoned House on the northern end of town. There are a handful of objects in the house, and interacting with them causes a musical note to ring. If you can play the right tune (the melody of which is played in the background while you’re in Tranquility Lane), you can access the failsafe.
Go ahead and play around a bit… or cheat and use the items in the following order: Radio, Glass Pitcher, Garden Gnome, Glass Pitcher, Cinderblock, Garden Gnome, Glass Bottle. If you played them correctly, a screen will appear in the room.
Use the failsafe, activate the Chinese Invasion Program, and go confront Dr. Braun (Betty).
Although you effectively killed everyone in the simulation, you gain karma for releasing them from Dr. Braun’s control. It’s one of the oddities of Fallout 3 – real murder turns out to be less evil than virtual murder (the other option).
Oh well. Sometimes karma doesn’t make sense, I suppose.
