American Gladiators is a fun and exciting competition television show that encourages children to compete is a friendly way. American Gladiators is the perfect theme for a children’s birthday party because of the natural theme of “patriotism meets competition.” We just created this birthday party for our boys this past October and it was a big hit with the 22 children and the adults that attended. I have already written part one to this article that focused on the theme, the invitation and the venue ideas for your homemade American Gladiator birthday party. You can check it out by clicking here or by checking out my writer’s page here to get a complete list of all the article parts that I may have written for the American Gladiator birthday party by time you are reading this.
Like every party planning article I write, I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping everything as homemade as possible. Time and time again, the compliments and memories come from homemade elements that we create, not prepared commercial items. If you use everyday things in your home for the games and activities it saves money and waste. Keeping things as personal as possible adds to the memories and warm feelings left with your guests.
If you read part one of Creating a Fantastic Homemade American Gladiator Birthday Party than you should be all set when it comes to how to invite your guests and what venue to choose for your American Gladiator birthday party. One topic worth mentioning again is the overall theme.
Homemade American Gladiator Birthday Party THEME:
The American Gladiator birthday party will actually consist of 3 events that are our interpretation of 3 of the events on the American Gladiator television show. We will be putting the children on 2 teams, RED and BLUE and calling them Contenders. Many of the decorations are centered around the 2 team colors.
America, patriotism and the colors red, white and blue are your major themes even more than American Gladiators. Buying patriotic themed items after July 4th, Memorial Day, or Veterans Day is a very good idea.
Homemade American Gladiator Birthday Party SUPPLIES:
I waited as long as possible to buy my paper products so that I could purchase them at 90 percent off due to a holiday. If you can find them on sale, then you could certainly decide to use patterned patriotic themed paper goods instead of solid, usually cheaper, paper goods. If not, stick with solid paper goods as they are much cheaper. Since white is by far the cheapest color to buy, use mostly white and compliment with a few red and blue cups or napkins.
Table cloths, confetti, tableware and balloons can all be purchased at the dollar store. The dollar store is significantly cheaper overall and usually has items that can be purchased and re-used like serving dishes and table cloth weights. Search the day after a patriotic holiday for themed toys, paper good, favors and the like at dollar stores. I was able to get many .25 items for my party to use as decorations, favors and food containers.
Homemade American Gladiator Birthday Party DECORATIONS:
When I choose how to spend my money for a particular birthday party, I rarely spend much on decorations. I would much rather spend the money on things that the guests can take home with them. So, when you buy decorations for your Homemade American Gladiator birthday party, keep it simple. Use first any items you were able to get dirt cheap and incorporate those before buying anything full price. Search your home for things that you already own that are red, white or blue like bowls, platters even candles that you could place high at the American Gladiator birthday party.
Patriotic Window Clings: Clings are those plastic pictures that are designed to stick to glass and plastic. They are one of the things that are very easy to find 90 percent off or more. I bought 25 sets or more because I found them for .10 and they were originally $1.99 each. The clings are very useful for your homemade American Gladiator birthday party because you can jazz up a cheap white table cloth by placing them all over it on a table. Clings also safely stick on floors (perfect at a gym), a basketball backboard, on 2 liter bottles, on chairs or on anything stainless steel or metal. They are the perfect decoration. You can reuse them over and over too.
Team Areas: For our Homemade American Gladiator birthday party we set 2 areas in our party space (a church gym) for the 2 teams, red and blue. We decorated them simply by adding streamer in the team color, balloons, a big poster with a marker hanging so contenders could sign the poster and enough pom poms (priced at a buck for a 2 pack at the dollar store) for each contender to have one. The streamer, balloons, poster and pom poms were enough to mark the team territory and get the contenders pumped. There was no need for pricey helium balloons, pre-made signs or fabric of any kind.
Table Area: We had round tables set up where the guests could sit and eat with their parents. They were covered in a plastic cheap tablecloths with the clings decorating them. We did have a helium balloon, bought on clearance, sitting on each table surrounded by patriotic themed tootsie rolls as “confetti”. We had a rectangular table set up by the door for check in and a couple of rectangular tables set up for crafts.
Signs and Posters: Like always, I didn’t use any pre-made posters for our American Gladiator birthday party. I made simple Happy Birthday signs on our computer and added photos of my boys on the posters. They cost next to nothing, just ink and cheap photo paper, yet they become a keepsake because they hold the guest of honor’s image.
I also created all I would have of American Gladiator themed decorations. I copy and pasted images from the American Gladiator website and printed those on my computer and hung them. I choose to put Hulk Hogan on a poster that read “Are you ready Rookie?” I did several American Gladiator posters with my sons’ favorite gladiators on them with funny sayings. You can even identify food tables, bathrooms and gift tables with homemade American Gladiator signs. Guest love reading them and it allows you to have an American Gladiator theme without buying pricey commercial products.
Food and Beverage table: The table that holds the food and beverages is a great place to put any other decorations that you found cheap. You can also print out a single sheet of paper from your computer with an American Gladiator image on it that labels the beverage. I made Patriot Pop signs with Helga and used a glue stick to adhere them to Pepsi 2-liters. We called Sprite, Spirited Sprite etc. It just gives you an inexpensive way to add more American Gladiator to your party. I always get a lot of compliments on my beverage labels.
Homemade confetti: One of the easiest ways to add a personal fun touch to your homemade American Gladiator birthday party is to make homemade confetti on your computer. You simply copy and paste American Gladiator images and your birthday child’s images onto your print program screen in tiny pictures. Print on photo paper and cut out. Scatter the prints on tables and viola: cheap, personal and unique themed decorations! Guests usually collect and keep the images to take home. Homemade confetti is always a hit.
The decorations for your American Gladiator birthday party do not have to be pricey or complex to make a big impression. Good luck bargain hunting at dollar stores and in your own home for great decorations.
