Summer is certainly right around the corner. Many enjoy sitting out in their yard and relaxing during the summer months. This is where patio furniture usually comes into play. If you have patio furniture that requires the use of cushions you have probably stored them away during the winter months. Now that summer is approaching you can get them out and ready to clean. Below you will find some simple and helpful tips on how you can clean your patio cushions.
The first thing that you will want to do is wait until a nice warm spring day. Then take the cushions outside and lay them out on the patio. I would recommend taking a sponge and a bucket of soapy water and wiping down both sides of the patio cushions. Sometimes when cushions are stored they can get a basement or garage smell to them. By wiping down both sides you will be getting rid of any odors and dust that have probably gathered on the cushions. After you have wiped down both sides of the cushions, you will want to get the hose and rinse them off well. Make sure that you rinse both sides. If you have a clothes line in your yard drape the cushions over the clothes line to dry. If you do not have a clothes line you can put them on the chairs and leave them to dry. Be sure to come back in an hour to flip them over so that both side soft the cushions can dry properly.
If you want to keep the cushions inside of the house until you are ready to use them, I would recommend cleaning them and then hanging them up inside or placing them in a plastic bag. The plastic bag will keep them from getting dusty all over again. Since you will be using them avoid storing them back in the basement or garage. It may be a good idea to place them in a storage closet where they are easy to get to. I have found that just putting them on the chairs during the spring months works well. Most outdoor patio furniture cushions are made to hold up well in the rain so I would not worry about that. If your cushions are not water proof than it may be a good idea to keep them inside, or get plastic chair covers to protect them when they are outside.
Another tip on getting them ready for summer is to check and see if there are any rips or tears on the cushions. Sometimes when things get shuffled around during winter or bugs get to them, you may have rips or tears in your cushions. Look carefully and make sure there are no rips. If you notice a few tears and rips, you can either replace the cushion or if the rip is small enough you can fix it. You can purchase small patches from your local arts and craft stores that match the material of the cushions. You can then follow the patch instructions and your small rip will be repaired in no time. Next fluff up the cushions a bit before using them to make sure that they are comfortable for your guests to sit on.
