My mother didn’t have any problems hiding Christmas presents from my brother and me. She waited until the last minute to do her shopping. Then, she immediately wrapped the gifts and placed them under the tree… and dared us to touch them. Only once did I carefully unwrap one of my presents and peek at it. It ruined the surprise so much that I never did it again. When I had a family of my own, they could hardly stand the suspense of seeing their wrapped Christmas presents. To foil them, I had to get creative. Read this informative article and find out how to hide holiday gifts from nosey family members!
1. Leave the Recipients’ Names Off the Gift Tags
One Christmas I decided to be one step ahead of my family in the snooping game. So, when I wrapped the gifts, I put numbers on the tags instead of names. The numbers were completely random. For example, to do this at your house, “Joe’s” presents would be marked something like 5, 19, 22, 90 and 107. “Bill’s” gifts would be 17, 39, 45, 64 and 72, and so on. This trick worked incredibly well. The random numbers completely confused everyone. You just have to be sure to mark down whose gifts are what numbers so you can match them up later. You can then change the gift tags on Christmas Day. Or, to make things even more exciting, you can get your numbers list out and just pass the presents out.
2. Choose Out-of-the-Way Places to Hide Holiday Presents
The most common places to hide Christmas presents seem to be under the bed and in closets. If you want to hide holiday gifts from nosey family members, avoid these locations. Instead, look for out-of-the-way places your family would never think to look in. I’ve hidden wrapped presents in the back of the food cupboard, on book shelves, in my sewing box, inside flower vases, inside my desk drawers and behind drapes. Any place your nosey family members won’t look is a good place to hide holiday gifts.
3. Hide Christmas Gifts Off the Premises
I’ve done this with big holiday gifts like bicycles and stereo systems. I’ve not only hidden presents at other people’s houses, but I’ve hidden gifts for others as well. If you need a secret place to store some Christmas gifts for a short time, ask trusted neighbors, family and friends to borrow some space at their house.
4. Hide Unwrapped Presents With Items That Are Alike
This is one of the easiest ways to hide holiday gifts from nosey family members. It can be a bit risky though, if they pay enough attention. Here’s how it works: if you have dress clothes to hide, place them on hangers and hang them in your closet. Fold up items that can’t be hung up and slip them in your drawers underneath your own clothing. Bought a book for a family member? Slide it in among your other books on the shelves, and it will likely go undetected.
