Today I will be teaching you how to make a metal sword in Photoshop. This method can be used in Photoshop 6.0 and above. To start open a new document and then make sure you are in RGB color mode. The first step it to open a new document. The next step is to select the shape tool and then choose the rectangle shape. Once you are on the rectangle tool click and drag until you make a long rectangle shape. This will be the main blade of the metal sword we are making. Now once you have created this rectangle it’s time to make it look like metal. We can do this by going to Layer then Layer style on our top menu. Once you are on the Layer Style menu select Gradient Overlay. Then click on the tiny arrow next to the gradients and select load gradients. From this point on choose Metals and click load. Now you will be able to apply a metal gradeint to the basic shape of you metal sword. I think silver would be a good looking gradient to apply to the blade. After that play with the angle, style , and scale until you get something that you like. There is not right or wrong way to apply this effect. It all depends where you want the light and reflection to come from. Once you have something you are happy with click OK.
Now we must create the sharp tip of the blade on our metal sword. To do this select the shape tool and then choose the custom shape tool. Now after you are on the cumstom shape tool you will see a new menu bar at the top of the program. From this point on click the drop down arrow next to the word shape on that menu. After that click the other tiny arrow and select load shapes. Now after that click on custom shapes and you will now be able to see more shapes. Before you create the trianlge, be sure to makea new layer. Click on the drop down arrow again and select the solid triangle. To help you place the triangle at the tip of your blade hold down shift to keep the same proportions. Also you can hold down the space bar while you move it to keep it in perfect allignment. Now once you have this apply the same silver metal gradient we did at the start of the lesson. This time we will apply it to the layer that the triangle is on.
How that we have created the blade of our metal sword we can make a simple handle for the sword by making two crossing rectangles. Just make one rectangle going from to right, and then another one going up and down. After this step you have finished your sword. To add a little life to this work of art you can add a cloud backgound. Another great effect would be outer glow on the blade. This combined with some dark clouds will make you sword look awesome. I hope you enjoyed this lesson. Have a great day.
