Have you ever thought about making a pillow case from your old bed sheets that you do not use anymore? It is really quite simple to do. All you need is a few things to get you started and it really shouldn’t cost you anything extra if you have these at home already. The only material that you need to do this project is a pair of scissors, some thread, sewing pins to hold the material together, a crayon, your choice of material, and a sewing machine.
Here are some simple instructions to get you started.
Begin by searching your home for some old sheets or any other material that is just collecting dust around your house. If you have children, you can even use some of your child’s old sheets that they used when they were in a crib or toddler bed. There is definitely plenty of material to make at least one good sized pillow cases out of those sheets. It will also let you get more use from them. Depending on how old your child is, he just might like his new pillow cases. (But that all depends on the pattern of those sheets.)
After you have gathered all of the supplies needed, begin by deciding on how big of a pillow case you are going to make. (This information is just for the basic rectangular size pillow case.) Once you have decided, use a crayon on the inside of the material to mark the edges of where to cut the material. You should only have to sew three sides of the material together. Two sides will be sewed together completely and one side will be sewed along the edge where the pillow will slide in.
Now that your material is cut, turn the material inside out. You don’t want the sewing to be shown on the outside of the pillow case. The first part that you will want to begin sewing is the top edge of the pillow case where the pillow will slide in. Fold the edge over twice so that you have a good seam in place. Place sewing needles on the material to help you keep it together. Then begin sewing the material together on the edge. (Just don’t sew both pieces together.)
After you have sewn the top edge seam, you will begin by folding the material in the shape of a rectangle. (Make sure to keep the material inside out.) Begin to sew the bottom edge of the pillow case first, and then sew up the long edge of the pillow case. (You can use the sewing needles to help keep the material in the shape that you want.) After you have finished sewing the edges together on your pillow case, turn the material to the right side out. Test the pillow case out by putting your pillow in it to see if it fits the size of your pillow. Hopefully it worked and your child can enjoy his/her new pillow case.
