A red felt or satin heart-shaped pillow is a fun gift to give someone on Valentine’s Day or for any occasion year round. My Grandmother was a seamstress, and she used to make heart shaped pillows for me when I was in high school. I had a few of them on my bed; they made me smile each time I saw them. So many years later I gave some of them to a niece and I think I still have one tucked away in a closet.
Make a Heart Pattern
To create a heart-shaped pillow first make a pattern of a heart. You may use any size heart-shaped box of chocolates as a pattern. Just trace around the box to make the heart shape. Then use that pattern to cut the fabric into a heart shape. You may also find a picture of a heart in a magazine or on the Internet. Then use the Xerox machine to enlarge it to the size pattern you want to use.
Pick a Fabric
Decide what kind of fabric you want to use. The pillows are cute in red felt, red satin, or red cotton or red lace. Be creative, find a fabric you love! Once you have cut the fabric into a heart shape sew on any decorative beads or sequins you want to use to the front piece of the fabric. Plain pillows are pretty too. Decide if you want to decorate the pillow; if so do it now.
Stitch the Pillow Together
Then decide if you want the stitches to show on the outside of the pillow or not. If you want the stitches to show get a large embroidery needle and red embroidery thread. Put the front and back pieces of the pillow together and start to make stitches to sew the pillow together. Leave a small opening at the bottom to fill the pillow with cotton filling. Then stitch the bottom of the pillow together.
To make a pillow where the stitches will not show on the outside, put the front and back of the pillow on top of each other and then make small stitches around the perimeter, leaving a small area open to add the cotton filling. Then flip the pillow inside out so the stitches do not show, fill it with cotton, then sew the hole at the bottom shut.
Be Creative! Every Pillow is Unique
A decorative pillow is easy and fun to make. Home-made pillows sell well at craft fairs. I have made them in all kinds of fabric and shapes and they are always snapped up quickly. Pillows made of vintage fabrics or needlepoint are very popular as are lacy pillows and pillows made of Irish silk.
