Love lip balm? Why not make your own? It’s easier than you might think, plus you can completely customize it with your own scent, flavor or color to make it truly unique. Here are some pointers on how to make lip balm to get you started.
There are a variety of different ways you can go about making your own lip balm. The easiest by far is to purchase an already-made lip balm base that you will just add your own flavors, colors or vitamins to. Lip balm base can be purchased at some craft stores or online and it is relatively inexpensive for the amount of lip balm you can make with it.
If you prefer, rather than using a base that is already made, you can create your own lip balm base using products that are easy to find at craft stores or supermarkets. To make your own base you will need beeswax, petroleum jelly or alternatively natural oils like almond oil or coconut oil, essential oils for fragrance, honey and optionally, Vitamin E.
You will also need a glass measuring cup with a pour spout and containers to hold your lip balm. You can buy a variety of lip balm containers online, or you can try using pill boxes, little plastic paint pots or even recycle old empty lip balm containers to fill with your own mixture.
To Make the Lip Balm
You’ll need to melt your ingredients together to make your lip balm regardless of whether you are using a pre-made lip balm base or making your own. If you are mixing your own you can either play around with a combination of the ingredients until you find the right consistency, or you can find a number of different lip balm recipes online. Whichever method you are using do not add your essential oils or flavors until you have melted the base.
Once the ingredients are added to the measuring cup, microwave it until it is melted, removing it from the microwave about every 30-40 seconds to stir it around to help it heat evenly.
When the base ingredients are melted you can add your essential oils or flavors. A few drops is typically enough so don’t over-do it. At this point you can also mix in a few chunks of an old lipstick to add some color to your lip balm if you would like.
After everything is mixed together and quickly before your mixture cools and hardens, pour it into your containers and set them aside to harden. Pouring the mixture can be a bit messy, so be sure you protect your work surface. If you prefer you can try using a dropper to transfer the liquid to your containers, but you will need to move quickly to keep it from hardening inside the dropper.
You can play around with different scents, add various lipsticks for color and play with different package designs until you come up with your perfect lip balm. It’s a fun, easy and inexpensive way to create your own natural cosmetics.
