Keeping your closet neat and organized is not an easy task. It is so easy to just start tossing stuff in the closet and not putting things where they go. After awhile, you close is a mess and you can’t find any of your favorite clothes or shoes. Organizing your closet doesn’t have to difficult! You can get it in shape and keep it that way in a day or less.
First, you’ll need to go through the closet and pull everything out. In order to get it organized, you need to see what you have so you can put it back together in a way that makes sense. Gather together shoes, winter clothes, summer clothes, purses, and other similar items in piles. Go through each pile and see if the clothes fit and you actually wear them and if the purses and other items are things you use or things that just collect dust. You can donate any items that don’t fit or you don’t use to charity which will make more room for things you really want in your closet.
Decide where you want to put everything in the closet. You might want to keep all your purses in a storage container on a shelf so they don’t get dusty and dirty and they stay together. You may want to keep your dressy shoes and other shoes you don’t wear all that often in the original shoe boxes or in plastic shoe storage boxes on the top shelf so they are out of your way. If you do this with your shoes, consider taking a picture of the shoes in each box and putting the picture on the box so you know what shoes are where. If you keep different seasons of clothes in your closet, it’s best to keep the current season towards the front and the other seasons out of the way near the back.
To keep your clothes in good shape and your closet looking good, consider buying good quality plastic or wood hangers to replace all your metal hangers. You can find hanging shelves for sweater storage in most stores including Walmart. These keep your sweaters from getting out of shape. Pants hangers can be used to hang multiple pairs of pants neatly which will save space. Hang like items together for easy access like t-shirts, jeans, long sleeve shirts, sweatshirts and dress pants.
If you really want an organized closet, you can tear out your original closet system and get a basic or even a very fancy closet system from your local Home Depot or Lowe’s. These closet systems are generally easy to install and will help you utilize all your closet space to it’s fullest potential. This is a great idea for someone with more clothes than closets!
To keep your closet looking good once it is organized, be sure to go through it monthly and straighten up and put items back where they belong. Also, at least once a year, go through and get rid of things you haven’t worn or used. You’ll love your new organized closet and you’ll be surprised how easy it is to get organized and stay that way.
