Whether you have just got done doing your spring cleaning, finished organizing your things or just need to make more space in your home, a yard sale is a great way to get rid of unwanted items. It also gives you the chance to make some extra cash. Planning and operating a yard sale can get pretty busy so I have created some ideas to help you along the way.
To start, you should create a map of the area that you will be holding the yard sale in. Just a simple sketch on some paper will due. In your sketch, be sure to locate where the drive way is, the mailbox, trees, flower boxes, etc. Be sure that you have an area where your customers can park and easy access to all the tables. Decide where you want to set up your own station where you can help pack bags for people and set up your cashier table. This will be a good start to set up your yard sale.
Next, you will want to start organizing the merchandise that you are going to sell. Divide your items into categories such as books, clothing or furniture. Once you have your categories organized, place them on your sketch so you’ll be ready the day of the sale. Place the items that you think people will want to see first when the arrive at the sale in front. You can also create signs for each category to place in front of the tables to help your customers find what they are looking for.
The next step is going to be to mark your merchandise with a price. You can either mark each item separately, or just price items by the table, such as all clothing for $1 each. Or you can do both. Be sure that the stickers on your items are clearly marked and easy to read. If you don’t have all your items marked, you may loose a sale because some people don’t like to ask. You will want your tables to be presentable and not over crowed. Be sure to have your grass cut, the leaves raked and a mess free yard to hold your sale in.
The last task, and the most important is to get customers to go to your sale. It will be hard to sell any of your merchandise if you don’t have any buyers. The best way to get customers to go to your sale is to advertise. You can put up flyer’s, add your sale into the yard sale part of the paper or put it on the internet. If you decide to put up flyer’s around your neighborhood, make sure that they are bold and easy to read if you are driving or walking by.
This is all you need to do to have a successful yard sale. You should be able to make some extra cash while doing this and get rid of some of your unwanted items. If you have any merchandise left after your sale, consider giving it to charity. Other people might need your unwanted things and it helps you clear out your home. Good luck on your next yard sale!
