Your home is probably your biggest investment and it’s essential to keep that investment safe. It’s important to realize that burglaries and break ins are usually a crime of opportunity, meaning if your house looks inviting and unprotected, you may be a target. Here are a few common sense tips and steps you can take to keep your home safe from burglaries and break ins.
See what kind of locks you currently have on your door.
The best kind of lock to have is a deadbolt which needs to be opened from the inside with a key. It’s much easier for your home to be broken into if all you have is a twist lock on your doorknob. Also, never leave the key in the deadbolt lock, you’re making it way to easy for your house to be broken into. It’s important that all doors in your house have this deadbolt lock. We even have a chain that we installed on the bottom of our front door. So even if the door was broken into, there’s still another deterrent for the burglar. In addition, you also want to look at the type of door you have, use only solid-core or metal-clad doors on the outside entrances to your home
Get a home security system.
There are many, many companies out there that provide this type of protection. A lot of them will even install the system for free and then just charge for extra keypads. Also, a lot of insurance companies will offer a discount if you have this home security system. These home security systems are great for not only keeping out burglars, but also if you have a fire in your home. A lot of these systems have the capability of being connected to your local fire department. The home security system will also furnish you a yard sign saying you’re protected by this company, use that sign. And put that sign in a prominent place in your front yard. This will definitely make your house less inviting than a house without this sign.
Look at your home maintenance.
Make sure you keep the outside of your house looking well taken care of. Make sure you’re keeping your grass cut, shrubbery trimmed and not overgrown. Overgrown shrubbery is a great hiding place for burglars. Also, make sure you’re picking up your mail every day and your newspapers. If a burglar sees any of those items in the front of your house, they may think you’re not home. If you have a fence, make sure it’s in good shape and make sure the bolt is working and use it. If you’re going to be out of town for several days, do not neglect your home maintenance. Hire somebody to cut your lawn, stop your papers and mail delivery.
Get motion lights for the outside of your home.
These are wonderful items for home security. Theses lights will detect any motion outside your house and light up. The last thing a burglar wants to see is a spotlight over their head. Anything that you can do to draw attention to a burglar is a great idea.
If you have a garage, use it.
Park your car in your garage, close the garage door, and lock your door leading to your house. You never know if somebody is watching your house and trying to figure out your routine for coming and going.
Put lights and home electronics on timers.
If you’re out of the house all day, it’s important for your house to keep that lived-in look. You can buy these timers at any hardware store and it’s a great investment. Burglars would prefer your home to be empty when they come in. So if they think you’re home because they hear a T.V. or see some lights on, that will be a deterrent.
