Are you planning to stay in – or at least hang with the family – on New Year’s Eve? You might be wondering what you can do to fill the hours before the ball drops.
Here are a few ideas that might work for you and yours.
Family Game Night
Pull out your favorite board games, card games, video games, and party games and host a New Year’s Eve Game Extravaganza.
Whether it’s a rousing game of Monopoly or a subdued game of Chess, enjoy a night of fun with the games your family loves.
If you don’t like board games, rent a few video games and have a tournament.
Since the idea is to have fun until midnight so you can ring in the New Year, there should be plenty of time for every family member to play their favorite game – no matter what it is.
Some of our family’s favorites are: Boggle, Monopoly, Connect Four, Clue, Crazy Eights, Go Fish, Battleship, Checkers, Chess, Old Maid, to name a few.
Family Movie Night
Go to the video store a day or two before New Year’s Eve to have a good selection available. Let every family member choose a favorite. Make sure you’ve got plenty of popcorn then settle down for a fun movie marathon of family favorites.
Why not introduce the kids to some classic old movies like Casablanca, Abbott and Costello, or The Little Rascals?
Make a Pizza Night
Gather up all the fixings for a family pizza bake. Let all the family members help make homemade pizzas by spreading out dough, mixing up sauce, adding toppings and cheese.
Make a Connection Night
Sit down together and make a list of friends and family members you haven’t seen or spoken to in awhile (or even those you see often!). Find their phone numbers and take the time to go through the list calling each one and wishing them a Happy New Year. They’ll enjoy hearing from you and it can become a family tradition of putting aside time on New Year’s Eve to reconnect with loved ones.
Countries and Cultures Night
How about getting to know a new culture or country for some New Year’s Eve fun? The planning for this will need to be done ahead of time. Have everyone in the family help choose one culture or country or one per family member. Choose recipes and crafts to try out together as a fun way to ring in the New Year.
As a variation, choose one country or culture’s own New Year’s traditions and try them out in your own home!
If your family enjoys crafting, make the night a Craft Night. Put together organized crafts for everyone to do, or have each family member choose a favorite craft or project to work on.
