Detective Poe stoically entered the office, the words told to him by his mystery stalker, left him feeling lost, as if his mind were in a complete and utter fog. As soon as he spotted his partner Sam Raven, Robert raced across the room to greet him. He was quick to put his hand on Sam’s shoulder, but before he was able to make contact, Sam spun around. A blank, placid expression was stuck to his pale skin. “Sam, it’s me, Robert! Don’t look at me like you don’t know me! Stop staring at me like that!” Robert watched his pupils, as they were getting smaller and smaller. “What’s wrong with you?” Robert cried. The man he worked along side of for so many years, suddenly forgot who he was, this suspicion was evident, as Sam walked right passed him, and without offering a goodbye. Robert was right to go after him, he walked as briskly as he could, across the floor. “Sam, whatever they have told you, I am not dead!” Before he could reach Sam, a familiar voice rang through his ears.
“The living cannot hear the dead, Mr. Poe!” The man declared, jumping off of the desk. Again, he placed his hand on Robert’s shoulder. Robert used a quick turn of his head to look at the man. “Who are you?” He glared. “I am such a clod, aren’t I,” He extended his hand out to Robert. “Inspector Pierre Amontillado, at your service!” He respectfully bowed his head. Understandably so, Robert wouldn’t accept Pierre’s gentlemanly gesture, instead, he pushed passed him,
His partner stood with his old captain and the desk sergeant from downstairs. While the trio spoke, Robert boldly interrupted, “So, what are chatting about this morning, Fellas?” Robert smacked his hands together. “When will you believe me, Mr. Poe, they cannot hear you, you are dead!” Pierre called out from behind. Robert angrily spun around in his place. He charged across the floor at Pierre and grabbed him by his collar. “I am not dead!” Robert gritted his teeth.
Before Robert could inflict bodily harm to the tall Inspector, his worse realizations came true. The captain, and the desk Sergeant and unfortunately, Sam Raven, were moving toward them. “Stop, Sam, I’ll hold my temper this time, you’ll see . . . !” As Sam was moving closer to Robert and the Inspector, he shielded his face from the frown faced detective Raven. “I’ll stop this time, you have my word!” Robert cried out. As Sam and the others came closer, Robert could feel them infiltrating his soul, as they moved right through his being.
Robert’s blue eyes immediately fell onto Pierre. “You weren’t joshing me, were you?” Robert begged. “You should have looked down!” This was the only explanation Pierre was willing to give . . . for now! “Come along, Robert, there’s not much time left!” Pierre declared. to catch up with Sam.
