The anime (Japanese animation) Sailor Moon revolves around a young girl named Usagi Tsukino who is destined to protect the world from evil kingdoms as Sailor Moon. It’s a romantic action series by Naoko Takeuchi and was first shown as an animation series back in 1992 and was published by Kodansha and it aired until 1997. Along with Sailor Moon are the rest of the Sailor Soldiers whom she will meet along the series and Tuxedo Mask who will be her love interest. It began as a Manga (Japanese comic book series) and is also shown in the US as Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon.
At the beginning of the series, Usagi was introduced as a very naughty and childish girl who loves to play around. She also isn’t serious enough when fighting the evil kingdoms that plan to conquer the world and steal their energy. But as the series progresses, you’ll see her get matured and fall in love with Tuxedo Mask. Among the characters whom she will meet are Ami Mizuno, Rei Hino, Makoto Kino and Minako Aino. They are Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus, respectively. They are endowed with special powers to battle the different evil menaces that threaten the world. And by the way, the Sailor Soldiers are all ladies.
The story is quite good even though it’s the usual good soldiers versus the bad guys. The romance is a good twist to the plot and it did serve a great purpose to the development of the main characters. All throughout the series, you’ll notice that there are lot of comical scenes and it is one of the aspects Sailor Moon is famous for. You’ll often see fighting amongst the protagonists of the series which are often not serious and are really funny. But they are well placed throughout the series that it didn’t affect the balance of the story.
The technical aspects of the series are pretty good as well. The way the characters are shown are a bit sensitive since you’ll see girls wearing really skimpy and oftentimes revealing outfits that may not be suitable for young viewers. The application of the colors for the characters, the surroundings and the visual effects (the changing of costumes and battle sequences) are top notch as well and the animation is fluid in motion. They are well designed and it did complement the story of the series.
The sounds are pretty nice as well and the series is also famous for its opening theme song entitled “Moonlight Densetsu” which is translated as Moonlight Legend. The other musical backgrounds and sound effects are astounding as well especially during battle sequences. The Sailor Moon series also featured 3 movie films names Sailor Moon R: The Movie, Sailor Moon S: The Movie and Sailor Moon Super S: The Movie.
I have watched the series when I was a kid and although I wasn’t able to watch the entire series in full, I was able to watch majority of it until the last few episodes. It may still be available in re-runs in some premium/local channels. If you want a nice romantic comedy action (pretty good combination) Japanese animation, Sailor Moon will definitely deliver.
