John Travolta announced early Sunday morning (January 11) that he would not be attending the Golden GlobeAwards ceremony that night. Representative Samantha Mast told E! News that Travolta, whose latest movie “Bolt” has been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, would not be in attendance.
It had been speculated that John Travolta might bow out of attending the Golden Globe Awards due to the tragic loss of his 16-yea-old son Jett on January 2. A private memorial service was held on Thursday. It was reported on CNN’s “Larry King Live” that the service lasted roughly ten minutes. A Scientology minister presided. Among those in attendance were Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker, country superstars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, and baseball legend Cal Ripken, Jr. Oprah Winfrey, unable to attend because of an engagement in Africa, sent her condolences.
News of Jett Travolta’s death was reported soon after the young man had a seizure in the Travolta’s Bahamas vacation home. Jett Travolta had been found unconscious on a bathroom floor. Attempts to revive him had been unsuccessful and he was transported to Freeport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
It was believed that the seizure had been a result of Kawasaki syndrome, a febrile illness usually contracted by children that can sometimes lead to later complications of heart disease, aneurysms, and coronary artery dilation. Jett Travolta, according to Michael Ossi and Michael McDermott, John Travolta’s lawyers, had a history of recurrent violent seizures, sometimes resulting in unconscousness, that may have stemmed from Kawasaki Syndrome.
An autopsy was performed on the young man Monday, January 5. Unofficial reports indicate that the autopsy found that Jett Travolta died as a result of his seizure disorder and that there was no sign that would indicate foul play or wrongdoing. An official at the funeral home, Glen Campbell, reported that the listing on the death certificate for cause of death had read simply “seizure.” Jett Travolta’s body was then moved to a crematorium. John Travolta received the remains of his son later that day, then he, his wife, and daughter flew to their home in Ocala, Florida.
The 66thAnnual Golden Globe Awards will be aired Sunday, January 11, on NBC from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California. John Travolta was to attend the awards ceremony in support of the Disney animated hit movie “Bolt,” which is up for two Golden Globe Awards: Best Original Song for “I Thought I’d Lost You” (which Travolta sang with co-star Miley Cyrus) and Best Animated Movie. Travolta played the voice of the title character in “Bolt.”
Given the respect and admiration many have for the Travolta family, the ceremony is expected to have several moments of acknowledgment and support from their friends and colleagues within the industry.
The Golden Globe Awards are one of Hollywood’s two premiere awards ceremonies and considered by many to be the primary indicator of what to look for at the Academy Awards.
