In my quest to use more natural beauty products, I recently discovered a wonderful companion for my solid shampoo – Jungle Conditioner, a solid bar of conditioning ingredients from LUSH that left my hair feeling amazing. For me, the application was a breeze, the product smelled like a tropical paradise (without the sickening sweetness of some other products), my hair felt fantastic, and it was economical in the long run. The Experience: Within seconds this amazing product touched my tresses I could tell that I had reached conditioning nirvana. The smell is a pleasing blend of citrus, sandalwood, and tropical fruits, and it creates an aromatherapeutic environment that doesn’t overpower your nose.
My hair is naturally a bit on the dry side, and I have been known to get a bad case of the frizzies within seconds of walking out into the humid weather, so I was hoping that this conditioner could help tame my mane. In short, I was not disappointed. After using Jungle Conditioner, I noticed that I could walk out into the rainy night and my hair stayed put – no frizz, no flyaways, and still beautifully shiny and smooth.
I should note, though, that if you have hair that tends to be oily you will want to use much less of this product than I did. It is full of natural oils which, for a person with normal or dry hair, can be a godsend. People with oily hair, however, may not be as excited about adding more oil to their hair. So if you do have oilier hair, play around with the amount you use to get the optimum amount of conditioner without weighed down hair.
Application: There have been mixed reactions by others regarding the Jungle bar’s ease of use. For me, though, the Jungle bar has been very easy to use and takes no more time to apply than a standard conditioner would. Let me break down what I did to have this luscious product on my hair, and working its magic, in seconds.
First, I broke off about an oversized quarter’s worth of conditioner. Next, I mashed it in my hands, and applied a bit of water to it so that I got a relatively thick paste to apply. Finally, I smoothed it all over my hair, roots and ends (helps with my flyaways), and let it condition for a few minutes while I shaved my legs (did I mention that this conditioner also makes a great shaving cream?).
At first it may take you off guard a bit, it does not feel like a standard conditioner. It applies more like a deep conditioning paste, and should be worked into the hair with your fingers. If you are concerned about tangles, a wide-tooth comb will do the trick to make sure that your hair is sleek and the product is evenly distributed.
Scent: Jungle Conditioner has a wonderful, pleasant scent – a blend of sandalwood, citrus, and hints of tropical fruit that leaves hair scented without being overpowering. It doesn’t compete with the LUSH shampoos that I use, which is an added bonus. I find that the scents are compatible which makes for an amazing, multi-layered group of scents that adorns my locks.
Quality: All of the LUSH products are all made with premium ingredients and the products are beautiful; some pretty enough to be deemed art you can use in your bath. The Jungle Conditioner is a vegan bar that contains natural oils and extracts including avocado, kiwi, sandalwood, kumquat, and cypress. The result is a brilliant, green bar that conditions as good as it smells!
One word of warning, though, this product does contain SLS, so if you are sensitive to this ingredient you may want to opt out of buying this bar. That being said, I am one of those SLS-sensitive types, and I have found that, based on the small amount of the conditioner that I use, I have had no adverse reaction to the trace amounts of SLS that make their way to my scalp.
Price: Like many LUSH products, this one seems high priced at first, but trust me, it will pay for itself in the long run. It checks in at $9.95 for a 3.5 ounce chunk of conditioner that has lasted me nearly 4 months so far. Even better, I still have a small amount of the product left in my shower. My hair is fairly long and thick, so what will round out to about 5 months of conditioning goodness for under ten bucks seems pretty good to me!
Where to buy: For those of us in the U.S. who aren’t lucky enough to have a LUSH nearby, check out Lushusa.com. Be warned, though, this cute and kitschy site will have you adding things to your virtual cart at lightning speed!
In short: Jungle Conditioner is a pretty natural, eco-friendly product that left my hair feeling incredible without breaking my budget. A definite winner!
