Twenty- five years ago I was diagnosed with seasonal allergies to grass, trees and weeds. My allergy doctor prescribed Benadryl for me, which worked great for helping to relieve my stuffy nose. Thankfully, Benadryl is now available without a prescription, and it is also used as an active ingredient in some sleeping aids.
When I have a cold or flu and suffer with sinus congestion, I have one special medication that I take just before going to bed to help me get a good nights sleep. That product is Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Non-Aspirin PM. This is a pain reliever and nighttime sleep aid combined in one!
Since my husband and I both take Kirkland Non-Aspirin PM, we find it much cheaper to purchase in the large 500 count bottles available at Costco. The front of the bottle reads compare to the active ingredients of Extra Strength Tylenol PM, but we’ve found that the Kirkland brand is a much cheaper alternative to Tylenol.
The pills are light blue in color, and are oval shaped, (in caplet form), and are easy to swallow. Each caplet contains 500 mg of Acetaminophen, which is a pain reliever that also acts as a fever reducer. The second ingredient is 25 mg of Diphenhydramine HCL, which is the active ingredient in Benadryl. This is an antihistamine, and common side effects are drowsiness, which relaxes some people and helps you to get to sleep.
Directions say that adults and children 12 years of age and over may take 2 caplets at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor. I have never given my child any kind of sleep aids, and personally would never do so. It is to be used for temporary relief of occasional headaches and minor aches and pains with accompanying sleeplessness.
Like all medications, there are warnings to heed, such as not taking this product if you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks daily, if you have glaucoma, enlarged prostate gland, or breathing problems such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. It also warns that acetaminophen may cause liver damage, so this is not a product you want to be in the habit of taking every night to help you sleep. It is, however, a wonderful aid for me when I am sick and need some relief with my breathing as well as helping me to fall asleep more quickly.
We have found the Kirkland Non-Aspirin PM to be very effective for us, it allows both my husband and I to get to sleep faster, although I do still wake up in the middle of the night on occasion. But I can say for a fact that I get a better nights sleep, and when I am sick, that is exactly what my body needs! When used as directed, I find this medication a great pain reliever and sleep aid.
