“I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side.” – Psalm 3:6 NIV
Verse six of the third Psalm of David, shows that while a host or army of men surround him, he has no fear. Wow, how can a person have such courage? The same reason given throughout this series, David knew from whence his help comes from. Since we already know that David’s help comes from the LORD, let’s review some of the reason’s David was so fearless.
1. David has already told God about his troubles.
2. David has shown God that he trusts the LORD completely.
3. David chose to believe the Report of God rather than that of man.
4. David continued to praise the LORD in the midst of his storm.
5. David knows that his troubles will never separate him from God’s love.
6. David cried out to the LORD until he received a Word from God.
7. Lastly David recognizes that it is God who has and is sustaining his life.
What all of these reasons signify is that David chose to be filled with the Spirit of God. When we are filled with God’s Spirit we are fearless in everything we do. Now one may wonder how can a mere mortal be filled with God’s Spirit? God’s Spirit will fill us with what we need, courage, leadership, prophesy, wisdom, power, love, truth, etc. By the mere fact David was a warrior King he was filled with the spirits of courage, authority, and power already. This was the only way David could effectively lead God’s people, Israel.
God does not appoint people in any position without indwelling His Spirit in them and having already gifted them with abilities since birth. There is a spirit God promises us, as His heirs, that He will not give:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” – 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV
So if God does not give us the spirit of fear then, that spirit can only come from one other place, Satan. Satan needles that thread of fear in us to keep us from experiencing all that God is trying to bless us with. He does not want any of us to experience the fullness of God. However, David recognized this and refused to allow Satan to use the appearance of his circumstances to instill the un-Godly spirit of fear in him. This is what we must do. The seven steps David took can be applied to us all to combat fear and rebuke this tactic of the Devil.
We have one powerful Spirit of God that will overpower the spirit of fear Satan uses against us, that is the Spirit of God’s love.
“Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.” – I John 4:18 NLT
1 John 4:18 tells us straight out that if we are filled with the Spirit of God’s perfect love, there is no room for fear in our lives. When we trust and obey God with all of our heart, this love fills us. Because we already know that no trial or trouble will ever separate that Love from us.
