Nearly 75,000 lip gloss keychains have been recalled due to high levels of lead in the product. The keychains were sold through Wal-Mart, Kmart, RiteAid, and Fred Meyer stores during the month of October 2008. The lead is found in the metal fastener or clasp area of the keychain. The maker of the keychain is Markwins, a California based company. The lip gloss can be identified as having one of three sayings imprinted on the container: “From the creators of Wet n Wild”; “Fantasy Makers®”; and “Brillant á lèvres”.
Lead poisoning is a serious condition that can have detrimental health consequences. Since lead levels accumulate in the bloodstream, the best way to prevent lead poisoning is through limiting exposure. Lead can be ingested or inhaled, it is also possible to transmit lead into the bloodstream by touching an object and then placing the fingers in the mouth, a practice very common to young children. Since the cap of the lip gloss is located adjacent to the clasp, it is possible to transmit lead from touching the clasp and then applying the lip gloss. It is important that children are not allowed to touch, handle, play with, or apply the lip gloss. If you have purchased the lip gloss, or if your child has the product, take it away from them immediately. You can contact the Markwins Beauty Product Company for a refund or to exchange the product as well.
If you suspect that your child might have lead poisoning or if you detect any signs or symptoms that are troublesome, be sure to contact your health care provider immediately. A blood test will be required to measure the amount of lead in the bloodstream. There are currently no home tests to determine lead poisoning or that will detect elevated levels of lead in the blood.
A person can be exposed to low levels of lead and think that they are fine, however since the body does not rid itself of lead easily, these levels will continue to accumulate and increase over time. Since these levels will continually increase, lead poisoning is extremely dangerous to unborn children, infants, and toddlers, as they are still growing and developing. Lead is also responsible for many ailments, such as impaired learning, extreme tiredness or fatigue, Anemia, muscle pains and cramps, emotional and behavior problems, and slow growth. Lead poisoning is a serious condition and should not be ignored. Make sure to notify your health care provider regarding any questions or concerns that you might have.
