This large Longs Pharmacy at the junction between swanky boutique-and-restaurant-lined Gaslamp Quarters and bohemian East Village neighborhoods is almost a substitute for a grocery store for the previously fast-growing area immediately north of Petco Park baseball stadium. Ruling the Market St block between 6th and 7th Avenues, it has no store-owned parking lot, but there is a paid lot right across 7th Avenue, and so this place is easy to get in and out of. This is the closest pharmacy to Petco Park.
This Longs has a full serviced pharmacy and a clean and well organized convenient store. The convenient store part (the 7th Ave half) sells everything from digital cameras, stationary items, household cleaning agents, some home repair tools, kitchen wares, souvenirs, canned and dried food, liquors, and frozen food items. The price is, of course, high, but some of the food items actually cost less than at the two real grocery stores in the area (Ralph’s on 1st and G St, and Albertson’s-Savon on Market and 14th). The staff here are always very friendly and know their own store very well. If you want to locate an item quickly, they will gladly point you to the right aisle (though the place is so well organized that finding things there is always very easy). Sometimes they are a bit short handed in the early evening hours (especially when the Padres are playing a game in town), then you might have to wait a while at check out.
This store doesn’t offer 1 hr photo development (but the other Longs Pharmacy on the ground floor at Horton Plaza does), but has drop off service that is utterly unreliable to return your photos on schedule. If you use this service, don’t expect to get your photos back in 3 days as advertised… It usually takes 5-7 days. This is about the only source of complaint I really have, and it isn’t even the store’s fault but the photo service contractor’s!
The well staffed pharmacy is located on the 6th Ave side, along with the do-it-yourself blood pressure measuring machine. Their technicians are very efficient, patient, and helpful. And best yet, they don’t mind calling the doctor to confirm the prescription if they don’t understand something. The OTC aisles are very well stocked with variety of brands for each medicine, and there are good selections of alternative medicine stuff, too. The price is competitive with the other pharmacies in the area (and markedly cheaper than the Rite+Aid on 5th and C).
