Lost and time travel. Did it have to be time travel? The whole time travel thing makes my head hurt. But I will persevere and possibly break out the Tylenol, as we leap into the Lost Season 5 Premier.
Last year, we watched the rescue of the “Oceanic Six” castaways and how they attempted to handle life off the island. It was hard, particularly to watch Jack self-destruct for a while. Then, after finding ‘himself’ at a funeral home, who isn’t really him dead (it’s John Locke), Ben shows up and tells Jack they have to go back.
For all of you people out there that kept saying that the island disappeared in time, you were spot on! That means from here on out as we progress through Lost Season 5 the laws of time travel will dictate how the storyline plays out for our castaways. Or at least the time travel laws as secretive physicist Daniel tells us, early on the island has become “untethered” in time. Untethered? Really? He continues to say it is just “hopscotching”. back and forth, back and forth.
Hopscotching means that we will go back and forth and back and forth throughout the season. I will need more Tylenol for this season, I just know it.
We pick up with the Islanders left believing that since the freighter blew up then Oceanic 6 are now dead, which we know they aren’t. They are three years in the future now and attempting to live the lie they have propagated about what happened in the plane crash. But our castaways are confused about why their camp and food is completely gone. That is the moment they are told they are “untethered”.
In the future time, we have Jack and Ben trying to prepare for their trip back to the island with Locke’s body. And then a happy miracle occurs for this Lost fan – Jack shaves his beard! Thank you to the Lost writers.
Kate meanwhile goes on the run with Aaron after she is visited by lawyers requesting blood samples, and Sayid and Hurley head to the safe-house that isn’t safe at all and Sayid gets hit by a tranq dart. Hurley’s picture is flashed on the news as a homicidal maniac that broke out the mental hospital and killed two people. We’re still in the future here people, are you keeping up? There is a lot of Sawyer’s naked chest going on too, so I don’t want to lose anyone here.
Now the whole “Desmond is on the island and Desmond is in the future” just completely messes with my mind. I know he is in both places but I have no idea how that can be. I welcome any thoughts on this anomaly.
We start the second hour with a pop-in ‘visit’ from Ana as she pulls Hurley over after he thinks it is the cops. She scolds him for actually stopping and says that Libby said “Hi.”. Hurley heads to Mom and Dad’s place and comedy ensues. Dad is watching Expose just as Hurely strolls in with the tranq-unconscious Sayid over his shoulder. After a little deflection of the cops by Dad, the cops stake out the house, Mom arrives home and is upset to find a dead Pakistani man on her living room sofa. This is so fun.
Hurley and his parents are truly a treat to watch. Best scene I thought of the premiere by far was when Hurley is forced by his Mom, to tell her the truth about the island. What a great synopsis he gives her of what happened, it was brilliant as only Hurley can be!
Then Dad packs up Sayid, drives past the cops, gives Sayid to Jack and tells Jack to stay away from his son. Jack takes Sayid to the hospital after calling Ben. In the future time (which we are all still at) Kate gets a call from Sun, who is L.A., and they met for coffee and Kate tells her about the agents and blood request. Sun, of course thinks this is Ben’s fault and that just reinforces her desire to kill him.
Meantime, Ben makes a visit to the Hurley’s home to get Hurley to go back to the island. But Hurley will have nothing to do with that idea and runs out of the house into the waiting arms of the police and their handcuffs. That’s going to make things more difficult now for an island reunion.
And speaking of the island, our castaways keep getting hopscotched through time and it is massively confusing and a bit tiring. Even just trying to find food and shelter is a nightmare and they have no knives and no matches. The attack of the flaming arrows left me scratching my head as Neil is marked as the first season casualty.
Of course, Juliet and Sawyer get separated from the other time-travelling castaways, yes Sawyer is still shirtless, and they get attacked by these armed guys in the jungle and Juliet is almost one-handed for life. Until Locke comes to their rescue and kills the bad guys. Now at least they have a knife.
I don’t who these guys are, are they part of Dharma or Danielle’s team?
Ben meanwhile has been a busy guy. He left John’s body with chick named Jill and then off he went to meet with Ms. Hawking and lo-and-behold the old girl works for Ben! I thought she would work for one of the many covert organizations to choose from, but no. I totally loved the swinging Pendulum with chalk, very dramatic, and the chalkboard and old computer with green screen. So she has figured out when the island is in time and now there is seventy hours to get the future-gang back to the castaways.
I will be tuning in each week and, oh yeah, I know I will need more Tylenol.
