The LSU Gymnastics teams pull off an impressive win over the 8th ranked Florida Gators Friday, February 6, 2009 on their home turf in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center with a season high score of 196.800 to Florida’s 195.825.
The LSU Gymnasts were led by senior Ashleigh Claire-Kearney, who won the all-around with a score of 39.625 and marking the 97th individual first place finish in her career at LSU. Second and third place all-around also went to the Tigers with Susan Jackson claiming the No. 2 spot with a score of 39.450 and Sabrina Franceschelli taking the No. 3 spot with 38.900.
The Tigers were ranked No. 11 going into the meet with Florida, and remained at the No. 11 spot when the new rankings were released earlier today. The Tigers remain at the No. 3 spot on vault, 13th on the uneven bars, 18th on the floor and 15th on the balance beam. Florida dropped one spot to No. 9 in the newly released rankings.
The Tigers not only performed well, they broke several team and individual records. Team records were broken on the bars, where the 49.425 shattered the standing record of 49.300. The Tigers also pulled off a season high on the balance beam, an event that had previously been giving several of the Tigers a hard time. The Tigers posted a season high of 49.300 on the beam. DD Breaux had this to say about her team and their performance against Florida, “The kids performed better than they’ve performed all season”.
Individual records were shattered by several competitors on all four events. Career highs were posted on the vault by Gloria Johnson with a 9.850 and Susan Jackson with a 9.900.
On the bars, the Tigers won the event, and these Tigers also posted career highs on the event: Susan Jackson with a 9.925, Staci Schwitkis with a 9.975, Sabrina Franceschelli with a score of 9.850 and Samantha Engle with a 9.875.
On floor, Summer Hubbard posted a season high with a 9.80, Ashleigh Claire-Kearney exploded with a 9.975 and Kayla Rogers tied her career high with a 9.900.
Gloria Johnson and Sabrina Franceschelli both excelled on the balance beam turning in a 9.80 and a 9.850 respectively. Samantha Engle tied her career high with a 9.850 on the beam.
