There has been some kind of a revelation as of late. It’s tough to point to its beginning, who knows how long it will go on, but let’s all just revel in it while it is here. Cupcake craze has swept the nation, much the same as the coffee shop craze we’ve all come to know as our neighborhood battalion of Starbucks. But this cupcake thing is real and it’s pretty cool and it should be made note of the next time you’re in New York City. Just ask the folks on Columbus Avenue. It’s not enough that Columbus Avenue has the best pizza in New York at Francesco’s but practically next door to this much favored Italian food of note lies the latest installation of Magnolia Bakery.
Magnolia Bakery has a smattering of items and services available; however when you stand on line for forty five minutes in the freezing cold around Midnight on a weekend, it’s for one reason and one reason alone; cupcakes. Yes, there are others who are in a group who get other things; but the real deal with Magnolia is that they have some of New York City’s finest cupcakes.
Really the deal with the cupcakes at Magnolia is a lot simpler than they let on. You can get “chocolate buttermilk cupcakes” or “vanilla cupcakes.” Your choice of frostings ranges from chocolate or vanilla icing. The vanilla comes in both white as well as a variety of other pastel colors. That’s how they get you going at Magnolia; so much of what they have is mono-flavored, but the placement all around their store with all these bright, vibrant colors leads the lay person to believe that they getting a variety of choices.
The selection doesn’t “end” there at Magnolia. For an extra $.50 you can get any of their “specialty cupcakes” which exist in a revolving rotation and include the likes of “red velvet cupcakes,” “pumpkin cupcakes,” “coconut cupcakes,” hummingbird cupcakes (cream cheese icing with toasted pecan topping)” “German Chocolate cupcakes,” and “Devil’s Food Cupcakes,” to name just a few. At any moment they may have up to two dozen different varieties of cupcake available.
Magnolia also sells cakes and other desserts (brownies, blondies, peanut butter blondie, white chocolate fudge bar, and their seasonal coffee & bundt cakes are yummy!) But the real deal with this joint is the cupcakes. They even go so far as to say so in their store “At Magnolia our cupcakes are baked fresh all day every day without the use or aid of preservatives or stabilizers. They are meant to be enjoyed right away!”
So the next time you’re getting a slice from Franny’s and you want some dessert, why not check out Magnolia’s on Columbus?
