This Valentine’s Day say I Love you with a DIY, homemade Valentine’s Day gift basket. Forego the expensive boxes of heart candies, which are impersonal and lack the ability to show those special people in your life that you actually put some thought into them during this special occasion. In are the thoughtful gifts that are personalized and created especially for that special someone.
Step 1) Make a list (written or memorized) of everything your special someone would most enjoy. Some of those favorites might include: types of chocolate, candy, colors, flowers, animals and collectibles (i.e. stuffed animals, dolls, Hot Wheels, sports memorbilia, stamps, art- etc)
Step 2) Using your list of items, figure out what it is that you would like to include in the homemade Valentine’s Day gift basket.
My personal suggestions of what to include are:
Chocolate- A small personalized box of their favorite chocolates. No sense in giving a box half-filled with chocolate they don’t like. So, take the time to get it personalized and make sure they enjoy your DIY gift basket from start to finish.
Jewelry- For her a beautiful boxed necklace, ring or earrings. For him perhaps some personalized cuff links or a watch would be ideal.
Stuffed Animal- A small or med. sized stuffed animal (their favorite animal). These are a common Valentine’s Day keepsake used over the years so keeping them small ensures that they will fit neatly into your Valentine’s Day gift basket and easy enough to keep around for a long time.
Candy- Pick up a bag mixed with their favorite individually wrapped candies (i.e. butterscotch, cinnamon, peppermint, taffy)
If you can, stick with hard-individually wrapped candies These tend to last longer and you do not have to worry about accidental messes in your gift baskets.
Flowers- Keep in mind that these will be going into a Valentines Day gift basket, so you do not want to over-do it. Something as simple as a single wrapped flower or small bouquet of their favorite flowers is enough ti show that you took the time to DIY, thinking of them the entire time. -Nothing says you can’t not order a larger bouquet in addition to your gift basket.
Step 3) Picking out the perfect basket. Now, it does not have to be a basket. There is nothing that says a large decorative bowl or box would not work just as well. As long as your container is large enough to hold all the items you have to put in it.
Step 4) Decorating your basket. There are so many different possibilities when it comes to decorating your homemade, DIY Valentines Day gift baskets, so feel free to experiment with different ideas or to not add additional decorations at all.
Decoration ideas that you can use to spice up your homemade Valentines Day gift baskets include:
Colored Tissue Paper- Try lining the inside of your basket with alternating colors (person and holiday appropriate).
If you do it so that the corners of the tissue paper come slightly above the rim of the basket you can fold the corners over the edge of the basket. This gives it a cute, colorful effect, so the more corners the better.
Bows- Strategically placed bows or ribbons are another wonderful DIY decoration.
Using a hot glue gun (or any glue), glue bows to one or more of the following areas: the outside of the basket handles; top of the basket handle; or all around the rim of the basket.
Step 5) Adding your items. You may place your items into your Valentines Day gift basket however you wish, as long as it looks nice and presentable.
I would suggest placing your stuffed animal in the back-center of the basket with the jewelry box or flower set in its lap. Then place the small box of chocolates in front of the teddy bear and sprinkle your other items around them. Whichever way, it is bound to be a hit afterall you DIY and took the time to personalize this Valentines Day gift basket especially for them.
