Going to malls is one of the most favorite pastimes of lots of people. It’s a good way to have a great time and relax off the usual day to day routine such as work, school, doing errands, etc. However, aside from having a fabulous time at the mall, probably one of the most talked about concerns regarding malls is security.
In the past couple of years, there have been some incidents that happened within malls from thefts to bomb explosions. Here in our country alone, there was one incident where a big mall was robbed while it was closed for the holidays at the end of 2008. The mall lost hundreds of thousands of pesos of merchandise that night. A few years back, some people robbed that same mall just when it opened which caught the people in the mall off-guard. They got off with loads of jewelry.
Those were just a few of the different incidents that happen in malls and those happened in just one mall. However, those were just merchandise. How about the safety of the people inside? There had been some incidents where bombs exploded in malls which claimed lots of lives. Those people were there to have fun but instead, some of them even mourned.
I don’t understand these perpetrators as to why they perform such acts. It’s probably for self-gain or just to scare heck out of the people. The question is, what about mall security? These things happen but what are the malls’ plans to at least try to prevent them? What are they currently doing?
One thing that I’ve observed, and probably most of you as well, is that malls tighten security when these things occur. They start to double check vehicles that are coming in and they even deploy K-9s. They also do a more thorough search on everyone who comes in. But then, as months pass by, most of the malls will tend to be lax. People can go in and out much easier and vehicles are checked less thoroughly. I just have to ask, what is the deal with the mirror that they use to check the bottom of the car? They check only one side of the vehicle a lot of times. That deserves a big “WHY?” The good thing is that I actually see some malls that are consistent with their uptight security.
As for the visitors, I can still see a lot who complain about the long queue at the entrance where the security personnel check the belongings of the people that are coming in. For crying out loud, that is for their safety. Be patient. You’ll get your turn soon enough.
Malls are one of the places where we could relax and set aside things that worry us. We visit malls with our friends and family to have fun and to bond with each other. Wouldn’t it be more fun and relaxing if you at least feel safe while strolling and shopping? Let’s hope that malls come up with good action plans and set them into motion consistently. Always be aware of your surroundings and always keep your composure.
