A sequel to one of the most popular Nintendo Wii games, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, will be coming for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is scheduled for a late 2009 release.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games was released in 2007 for the Nintendo Wii. The game drew some immediate attention for being the first title to feature Mario and Sonic. For those unfamiliar with video games history, these two characters used to be bitter rivals. Mario was the mascot of Nintendo while Sonic was the mascot of Sega.
The two most recognizable characters in gaming were the faces of the console war between the Super NES and Sega Genesis. Eventually, Mario and Nintendo emerged victorious. For Sonic and Sega, this was the nearest both entity got to the top of the food chain. After years of struggle that followed, Sega decided to give up on the hardware side of the gaming business and became a third-party developer for multiple video game systems.
This move opened up numerous opportunities with one of them being a cross-over game with Mario and Sonic. In spite of the falling quality of the newer Sonic games, many Sega and Nintendo fans were still excited for a possible platforming title starring the two rival mascots.
The same fans can’t help but be disappointed when Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games was revealed in March of 2007. Instead of a unique mix of contrasting platforming gameplay, fans got a mini-game collection.
That didn’t stop Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games from being a sales success, however. The game came out at a perfect time when many casual gamers were looking for party games. Not to mention that it was the official video game to the Beijing Olympics.
Because of those factors and the eventual release of the Nintendo DS version, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games ended up being the best-selling Sega game ever with over 10 million copies sold. This is quite an impressive achievement considering the company’s impressive history at developing excellent video games.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games hopes to continue the success of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. As expected the game takes place during the next Olympic Winter Games at 2010 in Vancouver, Canada. The two mini-games announced so far are Alpine Skiing and Speed Skating. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will also take advantage of the Wii Balance Board in some of the mini-games.
Like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will be officially licensed. The game will be released on Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS in late 2009, just before the start of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
