Most of the free countries all over the world have democratic governments which are supposed to work for overall progress of the country and the people. If the stated purpose is to be served well, the government must take care, in the best possible way, of its human resources at least. For this purpose, there are four vital areas in which the government must endeavor to provide free, fair, and uniform services to the people. I will discuss these four areas in order of their preferences one by one.
There is an old proverb – ‘health is wealth’, which not only applies for individuals but also for a nation also. Healthy people make a healthy society and hence a nation. It is also the most basic need of humanity. Progress of a nation is possible only when its citizens are healthy hence capable of good performance. So, in the interest of the nation, the government must provide free medical and health guidance services to all its citizens without any considerations of cast and creed. With this service by the government, there shall be no need of private medical practitioners in the country, so medical educational institutions must be closely regulated to produce only the desired number of medical professionals. Absence of private practitioners will also ensure a disease-free society because there shall be no body having vested interests in sickness of the people.
After health of the people, their education is the next important asset of the country directly affecting progress. Educational disparities lead to income disparities, so all citizens must get equal opportunities of getting education. Commercialization of education makes better education possible to the rich making them richer, and thus enhancing income disparities and a social divide. So, no educational service must be allowed in private sector on commercial basis. It is the basic duty of the government to provide free and uniform educational opportunities to all sections of the society upto the highest level. This will ensure homogeneous development of the society and prosperity of the country.
No society can be happy under shadow of fears and to mitigate fear from the people’s mind, a sound judicial system is a must to provide free, fair and speedy justice to the people irrespective of their cast and creed. Judicial system must not only be fair, it must be efficient also for speedy trials of criminal and other litigation cases. Accountability of every judicial officer must be ascertained to dispose off a litigation case within a preset time frame.
4. Land for Residence
Land is a natural wealth of a nation like air, water and minerals. Every citizen has a natural right to share it at-least for building a shelter for his habitation. This much land piece must be provided to every family unit of the country free of any charges at any place of the citizen’s choice subject to its availability. This will have two direct benefits – the citizens will have feeling of belonging to the nation and hence the patriotism in them, secondly, this land piece will eliminate tenancy from the country and ensure that no unauthorized person finds a place in the country leading to a more secured society.
These are not all, but the bare minimum what the government of a country must provide to its people as a fundamental duty.
