The beloved television sitcom classic, Mr. Belvedere, will be available on DVD on March 17, 2009.
Mr. Belvedere was based on the character of Lynn Belvedere created by Gwen Davenport for her 1947 novel, Belvedere. At first, there were three movies, Sitting Pretty, Mr. Belvedere Goes to College, and Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell where the character of Mr. Belvedere was portrayed by Clifton Webb. These were not exactly the same as the novel.
Many efforts were made trying to adopt the character of Lynn Belvedere for television, but the first three pilots that were made failed. The character finally succeeded in a sitcom in 1985 when ABC was able to adapt the character of Lynn Belvedere for television into a sitcom where he accepts a job as housekeeper for the Owenses in Beaver Falls, PA.
Mr. Lynn Belvedere was played by the British actor Christopher Hewitt (April 5, 1922 – August 3, 2001). The mother and father in the Owenses family were Marsha Ownes (Ilene Graff) and George Owens (Bob Uecker).
The children were Kevin Owens (Rob Stone), Heather Owens (Tracy Wells), and Wesley T. Owens (Brice Beckham).
Of course, the sitcom focused on Mr. Belvedere struggling to adapt to the Owenes and their household. It also focused on how he would be a good housekeeper and know what was happening with the children while George worked and Marsha went to law school.
ABC ran Mr. Belvedere as part of their TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Funny) line-up that aired on Friday nights. Mr. Belvedere was in that line-up from March 15, 1985 until July 8, 1990.
Shout! Factory will now be releasing seasons 1 and 2 of Mr. Belvedere on DVD on March 17, 2009.
The show will be released in full frame video and English audio, just as it was first broadcast. This means that the theme, of which many people are fans, will be the same. The theme was written by Judy Hart-Angelo and Gary Portnoy. It was sang by popular ragtime singer Leon Redbone. A never before heard full version of the theme can be heard on Gary Portnoy’s CD, Destiny.
There has been no news about any bonus materials or any of the un-aired episodes which occurred during seasons 5 and 6. Shout! Factory focuses on enriched music catalogues, home video and DVD projects, and television properties. This gives people the idea that they are a company focusing on retro music and programs, which is party true.
