Although I have tried on a few occasions, I have been unsuccessful so far in even finishing one of the books that I had begun. It seems that halfway through a drive to finish one of my books, I loose my inspiration about halfway through. Some books are definitely better than other and I would at least like to finish one by the end of 2009. I would like to publish the book but I don’t think that I will publish anything more than short stories until I am over 18 and then I will have more power over my work. One book that I have is in the fantasy genre, one book is more comedy, and the third book is science fiction and I have some short stories with the potential of becoming books. Stephen King is one of my favorite authors and I am amazed that he can be so prolific and his books are still genuinely interesting. So I have come up with 5 ways to reach this goal of mine:
1). Many successful authors that I know about set aside time each day to write and they write a lot of material. Ray Bradbury jots down about 2,000 to 3,000 words at a time and Tom Clancy writes a whole lot I know. I have edged into this habit a little already but if I could set a time every night then I would have the chance to write in peace and without interruption.
2). Another thing that I will have to make sure I do when I write this book is to be in the right mood when I am writing. I don’t want to be bored when writing the book and constantly looking at the word count to see if I am done for the day or not. Instead, I want to be able to sit down in my chair, think about the world that the book is set in, and type madly away until I can type no more. Luckily, I have been able to do this on good days and I have to admit that being in the mood contributes remarkably well to the writing process.
3). Listen to music. Music can help to get anyone in almost any mood and it certainly helps for writing. I use it rarely when I am writing and I know that I should probably use it at the right moment. But the important thing is knowing when to listen to music and when to shut everything out when I am working. Also, music can be very inspirational and it has helped me to add more material when I couldn’t think of anything at the time. The various different genres of music really offer a variety of different genres in books as well. It is important for me to fit the genre of music to the genre of material that I am writing.
4). Go out and see the world. The more anyone sees and they more they taste, touch, and hear, the more they have to think of for inspiration and thoughts to write about. It doesn’t matter how much I go out and experience new things, I can always do more of this and that is the beauty of it, I will always be able to go somewhere even if it is just in my backyard and take in my surroundings for inspiration. Other authors do something similar, they take long walks and ponder their latest work and this is something that I am considering as well.
5). Feel good about it. The most important thing about writing a book is to really feel the characters and the landscape in which the book is set in. If I can’t really imagine being in the book itself, then the book is as good as dead. Even though this might be difficult, I will try my best to keep the story alive and get it down as fast as possible, at least the rough draft.
In 2009 I plan to write and finish a book. What are you planning to do for New Year’s resolution?
