Every New Year’s Eve celebration, it’s been a tradition to light up fireworks to welcome the new year and to some, to drive the evil spirits and bad luck away. Another tradition when it comes to bringing luck in the upcoming year is to have round fruits at the dining table. Our family has been consistent ever since to include round fruits every New Year and I can’t remember when we first followed it.
There are lots of choices when it comes to the fruits that you’d like to include on your table. It’s also believed that having 12 different types of round fruits will bring more luck. Here are some round fruits you can include on your feast: Apples, Oranges, Grapes, Mango, Peach, Melon, Watermelon, Lemon, Jackfruit, Pomelo, Lychee, Strawberries, Blueberries, and Cherries. Some have bundles of these fruits or just one for each type of round fruit. It all depends on the availability of the fruit and what you’d prefer.
During the holiday season, most of these fruits are in-demand and there is a possibility that there will be shortage of some of the more uncommonly bought fruits. It is also possible that prices would go up because of the high demand for these fruits. The suppliers would raise their prices towards the dealers and in turn, some of the dealers may forward the extra cost to the consumers. It’s ok though since it’s reasonable and the prices don’t go up that much. As of this writing, the prices of fruits are already steadily going up and some of the wet and dry markets are competing for prices. But since it’s a tradition, people will still buy them even through the prices go up. We already bought our fruits yesterday and the prices were already much higher than what it used to be in all the shops, groceries and markets we’ve been to.
Along with the round fruits during the New Year’s Eve celebration, it would bring more luck if you celebrate with the entire family. Aside from bringing good luck, having fruits during the celebration would help keep us healthy. It is not uncommon to have delicious but fatty foods during this time of the year and fruits will at least minimize the risk of having health problems such as hypertension.
As with any tradition and belief, it all comes down to each of us. We will probably encounter tough challenges this coming year but of course, there are also lots of blessings that may come our way. It may come in different forms such as material stuff like money and food or even intangible things such as friendship and love and the least we could do is to give thanks for these blessings. Every small blessing counts. Let’s welcome the new near with a positive attitude that will drive us to have a wonderful and prosperous new year. Happy New Year to everyone!
