The New Year Festivities are celebrated in a big part of the world. The New Year’s celebration is the oldest of all the Holidays, and comes from more than 4000 years ago, from the time of the Babylonians. But in Babylon they celebrated the New Year in spring, not in January, because they logically followed the first new moon after the Vernal Equinox. It was in 153 BC when the Roman Senate declared the New Year’s celebration in January, and in 46 BC Julius Caesar established the Julius Calendar, with the First of January officially as the beginning of the year.
The Christian Church was for many years contrary to the celebration of the New Year’s festivities, considering them pagan. In the Western are of the world, we celebrate the New Year only 400 years ago.
There are different traditions and ways to celebrate New Year. From the beginning of the celebration of the festivities, every zone of the world created their own traditions to observe during these holidays. They are an important part of our culture, and they must be taught to our children to be conserved for the next generations.
One of the most famous New Year’s traditions is to make resolutions for the year coming: many people promise to quit smoking, or find a better job. The Babylonians often promised to return borrowed farm utensils.
In different places, the New Year is celebrated by parades. In Pasadena, California, the Rose parade is a magnificent event, with a continuous flow of carriages made or decorated with flowers. This tradition remembers the ancient celebration of the blooming of the crops. In Pasadena, as well, there is the famous football game, the Rose Bowl, a remained of the roman games that celebrated every important event.
Babies are used in many celebrations of the New Year; it makes sense, because an infant represents a young year just born, and many Germans still use baby’s decorations in their New Year’s parties.
