I hear it all the time, people asking, why are New Yorkers so rude? Well this is my theory. A native New Yorker isn’t angry or rude at all …. at least not until they step behind a wheel of a car.
If you’re ever been to NYC New York City to visit, or as a resident, you know the truth. A native New Yorker will gladly give you directions. In fact, a request for directions is just about the only thing that will get a New Yorker to stop completely in his or her tracks. New Yorkers are more than happy to show a stranger or tourist their proficiency with directions. They are also happy to suggest a bar or give their opinion on what is the best pizza place in that area of town. Finally, if you’re a tourist brave enough to venture into the NYC New York City subway system to get around, you can feel confident asking a random stranger on the street which train takes you where without worrying about getting your purse snatched (of course, you still have to use your discretion). I have personally witnessed men of all races and ages rush up the stairs on their way to work, stop, and come back to help a lady get her shopping cart or stroller up the stairs.
Why are NYC New York City Residents Considered Mean?
So where did this rep come from, that makes people ask why are New Yorkers so rude when they are planning on visiting New York City? There are a few possible answers to this question. But I think I finally figured it out.
The only time that New Yorkers are mean is when they are driving. That’s where they get the rep from. Many New Yorkers become absolute maniacs when they get behind the wheel of a car in NYC New York City . I don’t know what it is! It’s as if a cloak of anger befalls the average New Yorker as soon as they sit in the driver’s seat of a car and close the door. They get on the highway and start screaming, cursing, racing, and weaving in and out of traffic as if they have lost all sense of reason. I know, I’ve been there, on both the giving and receiving end of this behavior!
NYC New York City taxi drivers are the worst example of this conduct. They drive as if they are the only ones on the road. They cut you off within a hair’s length from the bumper of your car as if that’s the norm. They’ll jump in front of you, then come to a full stop to pick up passengers. Now you have to wait until they’re finished loading. Being “disrespected” by one of these yellow cabs is enough to make you instantly understand why the average NYC New York City driver is hopping mad whenever they’re on the road.
So if you are ever visiting New York City and want to avoid the rude ones, just make sure you don’t drive. Take the subway and ask for directions instead!
