Many right wing news sources are up in arms over the latest Christmas craze in Italy: nativity figurines made in the likeness of Barack and Michelle Obama. And no, they didn’t stick Barack Obama’s face on the tiny body of baby Jesus, for those of you who are still comparing him to the religious icon in a very hateful manner. (It amazes me that wingnuts are the only ones comparing him to Jesus; isn’t that blasphemous?)
Anyway, Barack Obama, his wife, and a slew of other political figures don’t actually replace any of the usual nativity figurines; they simply stand on the sidelines and watch. Italy apparently does this every year with many high-profile personas, and Barack and Michelle Obama are simply the most popular additional nativity figurines selling this year. It appears that you can also purchase Sarah Palin, John McCain, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and his wife Carla Bruni, so don’t jump down the Italians’ throats for worshipping the President-Elect just yet; this is a tradition that has been going on for some time now with many different public figures. It’s just garnered more attention lately because of the addition of one of the most beloved/hated political figures of all time.
And for those in the states who want to take part in their own political nativity scenes, there are action figures of Barack Obama, John McCain, and Sarah Palin available, as well as the Hillary Clinton nutcracker. So you’ve got your three wise men and the Virgin Mary (that’s a good one!) right there. Now just borrow a few of your kids’ G.I. Joes, Batman action figures, and Bratz dolls (these can be the barn animals), and you’ve got a very creative, unique nativity scene that will be sure to shock all of your Christmas guests.
And I know this all seems extremely blasphemous and horrible to a lot of people who might think it’s destroying the good name of Christmas, but if you buy expensive gifts for selfish family members who don’t need them, spend too much money on decorations, bake a lot of food that goes to waste, and put so much focus on the commercial side of Christmas, well, you might as well have an offensive nativity scene. Because, from what I understand, all of that stuff isn’t what Christmas is really about, and as religious as so many right wingers are, I don’t think they always practice what they preach. So complain away, but don’t forget to take a good look at yourselves, as well.
