Alaska truly is the last frontier. Being so removed from the rest of the United States, we hold on to our rights with frosty fingers as we watch our country lose its own. Currently, there is basically no gun control in Alaska. Our newest president, Barack Obama, hopes to change this.
Alaska state law requires no permits to purchase firearms, as well as no registration. Possession of assault weapons and concealed carry are entirely legal. There are no restrictions. There are no licenses. Alaskans are free to protect themselves, their families, their property, and their country with whatever they see fit.
What does Obama plan to do?
-Require both licensing and registration of all firearms.
-Reinstate the ban on any and all Assault weapons.
-Eliminate the right to carried concealed weapons.
He states that he is not banning firearms, but showing America some much needed “common sense”. Is it my imagination or is passing laws and regulations forcing ones view of common sense on a populace a tad short of democracy and a big step towards a police state?
To me its common sense to have the ability to protect myself from any and all threats at all times.
It is common sense to educate my children about guns so that they do not accidentally hurt any one or themselves.
It is not common sense to take the right to have easy access to a weapon from law abiding citizens so that the criminals that don’t abide by such laws can have the upper hand.
It is not common sense to make dangerous weapons taboo to children, and so make them more interesting. Nor to make them entirely ignorant to their use so that accidents are more likely to occur.
Obama is also quoted saying, “I think it’s important for us to recognize that we’ve got a tradition of handgun ownership and gun ownership generally. And a lot of law-abiding citizens use it for hunting, for sportsmanship, and for protecting their families. We also have a violence on the streets that is the result of illegal handgun usage. And so I think there is nothing wrong with a community saying we are going to take those illegal handguns off the streets.” in the 2008 politico pre-potomac primary interview.
If the people causing the problem are using guns illegally already, how are new laws for them to break going to help? Not to mention this is not a”community” deciding anything. This is a government forcing laws of a nation.
Many anti-gun campaigns have pointed out that Alaska ranks second in gun related deaths. They fail to mention that “gun related deaths” includes far more than violent crimes, and accidental child shootings, which Obama claims his legislation is trying to prevent. Alaska ranks 35th in the United States for gun related homicides. Only 2% of childhood deaths in Alaska are caused by accidental shootings as compared to a much higher national average. Guns are weapons, this is not a question but a fact. However strict gun control policies do not make them any less dangerous. That in Alaska where gun control is near non-existant, gun crime and homicides are on the lower side of the average supports claim.
If we ban everything people hurt themselves with we won’t be able to do anything. If we stop allowing the American people to deicide what is common sense, we relinquish our freedom.
Barack Obama’s new gun control plans only weaken the ability of the American people to be as they should be, free and proud. Keep in mind a nation that does not rule their government will be ruled by it.
