Writing a Check is very Simple – If the day of online debit cards, credit cards, and online billing, the art of writing a check is almost lost. Writing checks is still great if you prefer to send a check out in the mail; send graduate money; or just have checks on hand in case you’re without cash and need to write a check. There is nothing easier than writing a check. Sure, it may look daunting when you first sit down to write you first check. But this is not hard to do. With a little practice, you will be a pro.
Writing Checks: Paid to the Order of….
This is where you write in who you are paying the check to. You will also fill out the date. I usually write my date like this: 02/05/09. This is a easy way to remember, and is quick to do also.
Writing Checks: Write the Numeric Amount of Check
Now you want to add in the amount of check in the box on the right hand side of the check. Always do this in numeric; such a s 10.00. There is not much to this, just right in the amount. When writing this amount, make sure to write the amount as far to the left as possible. This way, no one can add in a number, which would add to the dollar amount of the check. This is a quick tip that is easy to remember.
Writing Checks: Write out Amount with Words on Check
On the line with the word DOLLARS at the end, this is where you write out the dollar amount. If the amount was $10.00, here you would write the following: ten and 00/100———————————DOLLARS. As you can see, I wrote out ten dollars, and then added a long line that ends where the check says DOLLARS. This is another tip to make sure no one can add to the dollar amount.
Writing Checks: Memo
At this point, you can write in what the check is for. The Memo on the Check is in the bottom left hand corner. This is a great way to remember what you wrote the check for. This can help when you are balancing your check book. The memo is also a great place to put an account number if this is needed on the check as well.
Writing Checks: Sign your Name
To finish off your check, now you want to sign your name. You want to use the same signature the bank has on file. Usually, this is just your typical signature. Don’t get fancy, just sign your name as you always do. I always sign in cursive, as this is quick and easy.
Writing Checks: Review the Check
It is important to always look back over the check. Not only do you want to make sure you made it to the right person; you want the make sure the amount is correct; and of course, the date is correct.
