More than 30 years after it originally opened, the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia is continuing its commitment to provide children with the opportunity to play, grow, and learn through a myriad of touchable exhibits. The re-launching of the Target First Wednesdays community program will offer families an additional opportunity to visit the museum on the first Wednesday of each month. The Please Touch Museum will stay open late on Target First Wednesdays, offering a deeply discounted admission price of $2 (normal cost of admission is $15) between 5:00 and 7:00 pm.
Sponsored by Target, and initially launched in 2008, the popular program provides visitors with extra time (the museum’s normal closing time is 5:00 pm) to enjoy the new Please Touch Museum, which re-opened in October of 2008 in historic Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park. Memorial Hall is the last major building remaining from Philadelphia’s 1876 Centennial Exhibition and the original home to the renowned Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Please Touch Museum’s entire gallery floor will be open during Target First Wednesdays. Visitors can explore exciting new exhibits like Roadside Attractions (a fanciful look at all things mobile), Flight Fantasy (experiments that will inspire future pilots, astronauts, engineers and artists), and Centennial Exploration (where kids will be amazed at the inventions revealed at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition including the first telephone, typewriter, and root beer). Old favorites like the SEPTA Bus and the Supermarket, as well as theater performances, art activities and storytelling, will also be open for exploration.
Originally opened in 1976, the Please Touch Museum was the nation’s first museum whose target audience was families with children seven and younger. The mission of the museum is “to enrich the lives of children by creating learning opportunities through play”.
In addition to its nationally recognized exhibits and programs specifically designed for the youngest learners, the Please Touch Museum offers amenities that are important to families with young children; plenty of on-site parking, a cafe, family restrooms and various areas for stroller parking. The Please Touch Museum is fully accessible by wheelchair.
The Please Touch Museum at Fairmount Park’s Memorial Hall is located at 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia, PA. The museum is easily accessible from SEPTA buses 38, 40, 43 and 64. These buses all make stops within walking distance of Memorial Hall. Bus route 38 stops directly in front of the museum. The museum can be reached by calling (215) 581-3181.
