Family-friendly holiday events are the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit. If you are in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex this Christmas, you can load up the family and drive through the holiday displays at Prairie Lights in Grand Prairie. Festive music and innovative displays are sure to wow the little ones.
Once again, the City of Grand Prairie is hosting Prairie Lights at Lynn Creek Park, 5700 Lake Ridge Parkway, at Joe Pool Lake. Over 100,000 people visited the attraction last year. This year’s event features 40% more lights and a new attraction, the Holiday magic Forest. The drive through light show portion covers a two mile winding path and includes 3 million lights and over 600 displays. Lighted displays arch over the road and appear to leap over cars. The grand finale, Texas’ largest light tunnel, lines the exit route.
Prairie Lights visitors can stop by Holiday Village located midway through the drive. Holiday Village, housed in a giant tent, features concession stands, carnival rides, gift shop and photos with Santa. Concession offerings include cold weather favorites such as hot cocoa and apple cider as well as traditional carnival fare including corn dogs, caramel apples, funnel cake and kettle corn. Well, it would not be Christmas in Texas without a corn dog.
Other Prairie Lights attractions include the Holiday Magic Theater and Holiday Magic Forest. The Holiday Magic Theater uses over 500,000 lights choreographed to music. The 10 minute show depicts traditional holiday celebrations from around the world. The Holiday Magic Forest allows visitors to walk through a lighted tree display adorned with tens of thousand of lights.
Prairie Lights is open from November 27 through December 31. The holiday hours are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Regular hours are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Admission to the drive through portion of Prairie Lights starts at $15 per car on non-holidays and $20 on holidays. Higher admission charges apply to limos, shuttles, vans and commercial buses. Admission includes the carnival rides. The Magic Theater and Magic Forest light shows each cost an additional $3 for adults and $2 for children. A discounted combo ticket is available for both walk through attractions. Separate costs apply for photos with Santa, souvenirs and concession stands.
