Iraqi journalist Muntather Zaidi might have intended his shoe throwing to be an insult; instead the Bush shoe video shows that when President Bush gets a shoe thrown at him, he can move with the agility of a 20 year old.
President Bush Gets Shoe Thrown At Him
The Los Angeles Times reports that when President Bush gets a shoe thrown at him, he looks “bemused.” The Bush shoe video attests to this fact, and it also shows a rather horrified Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki. The shoe throwing incident was intended as an insult to President Bush by the Iraqi journalist who hauled the footwear missiles – one Muntather Zaidi associated with Cairo’s Baghdadiya television channel.
Instead, the Bush shoe throwing incident garnered the 62 year old American president the grudging admiration of more than one news outlet when he ducked out of the way with the agility and unfazed aplomb of a professional athlete a third his age. It is somewhat concerning, however, that the Bush shoe video reveals a rather lackluster response by security personnel charged with protecting Mr. Bush.
Shoe Throwing Points to Security Problems
Anyone interested in American politics most likely remembers the video from the attempted Ronald Reagan assassination. John Hinckley, Jr. fired at President Regan in front of the Washington Hilton Hotel. Just like in the “Bush gets shoe thrown at him” video, there is a moment of uncertainty. Unlike the Bush shoe video, the moment of indecision is a split second.
Bush Shoe Video Should Be a Warning to the Incoming Barack Obama Administration
Granted, perusing the Bush shoe video YouTube has to offer like the Zapruder film is not necessary, but it should be a warning to the Obama administration. Security for the highest office of the nation is currently handled by individuals with questionable security tactics, a slow reaction time, and an even more debatable ability to foresee trouble.
Had President Bush not had an agility usually not associated with a 62 year old man, he could have been injured. No problem, you say? There is more! Had the shoe not been a piece of size 10 footwear but a Molotov cocktail or flask of acid instead, and had Muntather Zaidi been a bit better at aiming, the Bush incident could have been catastrophic.
Those violently opposed to Mr. Bush may snicker at this point, but it is worth of consideration for the Obama administration. While President Bush is reviled in part because of his foreign policy, soon to be President Obama will have to deal with the revulsion that comes by virtue of his skin color. Add to this the revulsion that he will undoubtedly suffer because of not immediately withdrawing all troops, instituting slave reparations, and a host of other pet projects by a large number of individuals and groups who believe “hope” and “change” to be exactly whatever it is they desire, and there is a good chance that he will soon be in the crosshairs of Zaidi imitators.
