I saw this product advertised on television several times and it looked pretty good. It turns out that looks really are deceiving sometimes. This product review for Romano’s Macaroni Grill boxed dinner is strictly my own opinion. You may not agree with me, but you’ll at least have a heads up.
This product is supposed to taste just like what the restaurant of the same name serves, at establishments all over the United States. I have not been in any of the Romano’s Macaroni Grill Restaurant’s, so I have no comparison. I can only tell you what I thought of the packaged version.
I checked our local grocery store to see if they stocked the Macaroni Grill, and to see how expensive it was. I thought I’d found a bargain when it was on sale for $3.98. It is a one box meal that includes the Penne pasta, the spices, sauce and even the grated cheese. You only need to add the chicken breast pieces. The box said it made six 1 cup servings.
The box also claims it to be ready in about 20 minutes. Well, it took me the better part of an hour to get the noodles done, after waiting for the water to boil. While the noodles cook the box instructs you to cut chicken breast up into strips and start cooking them in a skillet. After 5 minutes you add the spice packet, cook another 4 minutes and add the sauce packet and cook for 2 more minutes.
I was just a little concerned that the chicken hadn’t cooked long enough, but figured they knew what they were talking about. The final step is to drain the pasta and stir it all together. My first thought was that they were awfully skimpy on the amount of sauce they gave you. I like my noodles to literally swim in sauce, not splash on a drop or two per noodle!
I did a taste test, just to see, and apparently my husband could tell by the look on my face that I was not too impressed. I’m not sure exactly what kind of spices are in it, because other than listing garlic, basil and parsley, it just said spices in the ingredients list. Whatever those “spices” were, I sure didn’t like the taste of them.
I offered my husband a taste, and told him I’d happily whip up something else if he didn’t like it. His opinion was that it “wasn’t too bad.” Maybe he was being polite, but he did eat a serving of the Macaroni Grill Garlic and Herb Chicken Penne. Me, I ate a bowl of oatmeal!
If you decide to try it yourself, I would advice that you use two boxes if there are more than two of you. If you fill a plate full, much like you would spaghetti, there will be about half of the one box left. If it’s supposed to be a full meal, I sure hope you are not hungry!
As I said before, this is my personal opinion of the product. You may buy it and love it. Just don’t take them at their word when they say “about 20 minutes to fix” or you’ll have some hungry people on your hands!
