Planning a baby shower doesn’t have to be a trying experience; if you have a few weeks to get things accomplished you can do most of the prep work in advance and save yourself a lot of money over buying things premade. Wilton Industries has an extensive line of baby shower items ranging from cupcake liners, decorations, invitations and other items. I’ve used the Baby Treats Candy Mold for everything from plain chocolate treats to gelatin designs that make for cute plate decorations.
Wilton Baby Treats Candy Mold

The mold contains five adorable shapes, each about two inches in size. The rubber duck has a cute bow around its neck, the building blocks have the ABC’s and geometric designs on the sides and the stuffed elephant can be done up in a variety of colors. The last two are the train and the rattle; these are best done in two colors at most so you don’t lose the detail of them. Wilton gives some coloring ideas on the mold inserts but these are just suggestions.
Using the mold is not hard and does not require any special pretreatment. Just pick out the colors you want to use, melt the chocolate in a double boiler and paint in the colors to the mold. You can fill in the cavity with any type of chocolate you want but for an extra kick add some peppermint or spearmint to plain chocolate it give it a minty taste and smell. To make the process as easy as possible use a plastic squeeze bottle to fill in the cavities.
You can use the candies to decorate cakes or cupcakes or make favors from them. Wilton sells small plastic clear treat bags that you can add a bow to and have on tables for guests to take home. Another creative use for the mold is to make decorative hand soaps; if you use any plastic mold for anything other than food products it is highly recommended that you do not use them again in the future for food products as the soap or plaster can leave a scent behind in the plastic.
Stores like Jo-Anne Fabrics and Michaels have a ton of plastic candy molds and this specific one from Wilton costs about two dollars. If you can’t find it locally you can order it from their online store for about the same price but you will have to pay shipping. It is a well made mold that will make hundreds of treats if you take care of it. Clean it when done, store it properly and if cracks or dents occur use try recycling the rest of the shapes for other arts and craft items.
