The Boston Red Sox are not a team associated with changing traditions. They still have Fenway Park, the same look, and they were not able to change their losing traditions for 85 years. But times change eventually for everyone, especially the two-time champion Red Sox. The next Red Sox tradition to get an overhaul is their look, as the Red Sox will display changes to their logos and jerseys next season.
This week, the Red Sox unveiled some new alternative jerseys and alterations to their time honored logo. Although the Red Sox famed home jerseys will not change, their road uniforms will go back to the style of their old road uniforms from the 80’s.
Instead of having “Red Sox” displayed on road uniforms in red letters, the road jerseys will have “Boston” displayed in blue letters, like the teams of the 80’s. In addition, there will be an alternate road jersey that is colored blue, with “Boston” displayed in red letters. The Red Sox will also have an alternative home jersey, with red colors.
But the biggest changes are to the Red Sox logo, which traditionally has two red socks at the center of a circular logo with the team name. This year, the team name and circle will be done away with on the logo, leaving the hanging red sox as the solo logo of the team.
This “Hanging Sox” logo will be displayed on team letterheads, and on a secondary cap.
This is the first time since 1931 that the Red Sox logo has been tampered with. As such, only 20% of fans like the new changes in a poll at Boston.com.
The Red Sox displayed these new jerseys and logos right in time for the holidays, and two months before spring training. These days, it is common for teams in all major sports to change around their jerseys and logo, displaying retro jerseys and new looks. Nowadays, what would once be darker road jerseys in the past are now home jerseys today in sports like the NHL.
But the Red Sox have not joined this trend, in large parts, until this week. The Red Sox, Yankees and Cubs are the big 3 in terms of decades long traditions in baseball, and not as likely to change things as their counterparts.
But the Red Sox are changing their look, the Yankees are leaving behind Yankee Stadium, and the Cubs are looking for new owners. However, the classic look of the Yankees and Cubs jerseys look to stay around for now.
The news of the Red Sox new look only slightly overshadowed their pursuit of free agent Mark Teixeira, as the Red Sox look to match the Yankees’ recent big signings.
