If you are starting over, and ready to explore the relationship world, here are a few tips to keep you at ease. A relationship doesn’t necessary have to be taken slow, but you should always establish each others expectations, stay confident in who you are and have a way out if you aren’t happy with the way things are going. Relationships are always work, even if they are casual, but with these tips you can be less emotional about the relationship traps and more positive about the potential of a great companion.
What do you want out of the relationship? It’s good for you to communicate your expectations, as well as for you to hear what is expected of you. Things to discuss are commitment issues, should you commit or is the relationship an open relationship? Are you starting off as friends or jumping right into a romantic relationship? Get to know each other and your differences. If you can’t deal with a girl or guys political or religious beliefs, and enjoy that they are different, then it’s probably not your time to date anyone. Don’t change who you are and more importantly, don’t date someone because you think they have good potential, like and love them for exactly who they are at that time.
Don’t bend over backward for love. If your just starting to date, do what you want to do, don’t spend all of your time doing what you think you should do to make someone happy. Keep your beliefs and values, but have an open mind. Don’t close yourself off to the world, people do change, but it should be because they like themselves better changed.
If you don’t enjoy being with the person that you’ve started a relationship with, let them know. The best way to end a relationship, is to end it the right way. Never waste your time or another’s time, because you are too afraid to say your no longer happy. Communicate exactly why you aren’t interested any longer and then keep your distance. Don’t ever try to be friends with someone right away, give it time so you don’t give in to them begging you to return to unhappiness.
Starting a new relationship, after time off or a divorce, is exciting and sometimes worrisome if you don’t know what the other person expects from you. Keep a new relationship simple, with expectations on the table and your confidence in tact a relationship has a great chance of not ending at all. Have a great time getting to know the person you are choosing to spend time with and never set your expectations so high that they can’t live up to what you want, expect the same amount from them as you do from yourself.
