Tenuate (also known as diethylpropion), is a drug that is a little bit like an amphetamine in that it increases your heart rate and your blood pressure, while at the same time decreasing your appetite. For this reason, Tenuate (diethylpropion) is often prescribed as a weight-loss aid for patients who are obese. It is also sometimes prescribed in the treatment of severe migraines. Tenuate (diethylpropion) however does have some side effects both severe and less severe. One of the less severe side effects that many patients complain about is xerostomia (dry mouth or cotton mouth), as well as an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Now, while xerostomia (dry mouth/cotton mouth) sounds like it’s not that serious, it can cause more serious problems if left untreated. Bleeding gums, tooth decay, canker sores, and even a shortened life span due to increased bacteria in the mouth can actually develop if dry mouth/cotton mouth isn’t taken care of.
So, if you have dry mouth or cotton mouth (xerostomia) and you’re taking Tenuate (diethylpropion), what at-home treatments can you try to take care of the problem? Try one of these treatments and your dry mouth/cotton mouth (xerostomia) caused by Tenuate (diethylpropion) could be a thing of the past.
Drink Lots of Fluids – To stem dry mouth/cotton mouth (xerostomia) problems, make sure you drink lots of fluids. But stay away from caffeine-based drinks like coffee, tea, colas, Mellow Yellow etc. as these will just make your dry mouth problems worse. Drink a lot of water or fruit juices or even decaffeinated teas and coffees, and you should find the discomfort from taking Tenuate (diethylpropion) is much improved.
Don’t Smoke – Smoking makes dry mouth/cotton mouth (xerostomia) much worse as it dries up the saliva in your mouth. If you’ve been prescribed Tenuate (diethylpropion) by your doctor, the last thing you should be doing is smoking as well. Quit if you can, cut way down if you can’t, but try not to smoke as it will only amplify your dry mouth/cotton mouth (xerostomia) problems.
If You Can’t Quit, Chew Smoker’s Gum – Chewing gum will increase the saliva in your mouth, and chewing smoker’s gum will stop you from getting those nicotine cravings. Two cures in one for your Tenuate (diethylpropion) caused cotton mouth problems.
Suck Something – Sucking hard candy, gummy bears, anything that helps increase your saliva is a great way to get rid of dry mouth/cotton mouth (xerostomia). Just make sure you don’t eat too much or you’ll over ride the benefits of Tenuate (diethylpropion) and end up gaining weight instead of losing it!
Remember, cotton mouth/dry mouth (xerostomia) isn’t a no-remedy problem. With a few simple changes in your lifestyle, you can still take Tenuate (diethylpropion) but avoid one of the side effects it might give you. If none of these remedies work, you can also contact your doctor who might prescribe an artificial saliva spray or change your dosage of Tenuate (diethylpropion).
