I normally don’t take the time to review canned vegetables because, like most people, I usually just buy the cheapest brand because all vegetables usually taste alike.
However, after trying the sweet peas from the brand Wylwood, I felt the need to sit down and write about them. Yes, they are that good.
First of all, I didn’t buy this particular brand of peas; my parents did because it is one of the few vegetables my daughter will eat and we happened to be out of them when they were watching her for us. They apparently purchased them at one of the local discount grocers; either Save-a-Lot or Audi, I’m not sure which.
I also want to say that there really isn’t anything different about this brand than any other brand in terms of preparation either. I made them the same way I do any other canned vegetable; I dumped them in a dish and put them in my microwave for a couple minutes. But, in terms of quality, there really is a difference.
I’ve had the Wylwood sweet peas in my pantry for a couple of weeks but this was the first night I actually took the time to make them (we really haven’t been eating home cooked meals all that much recently). And, the only reason I decided on them is I felt they would be a good compliment to the pork chops I was making.
The first thing I noticed about the Wylwood sweet peas was their size. These things were huge compared to many other brands. In fact, I think some of the peas were about twice the size as those I’ve seen in some more expensive brands. This, of course, was the exact opposite of what I was expecting from a discount brand name.
If that was the only difference between this brand and other brands, I probably wouldn’t have spent my time reviewing them. But, I noticed one other major difference.
Normally, when I make peas or any other canned vegetable, I end up draining the juice that’s in the can and add water instead. I do this because the brine tends to be a bit saltier than I like and I can taste it on the vegetables. For whatever reason, I didn’t do that tonight when I made the Wylwood brand. And, I noticed the sweet peas tasted just fine. I’m not sure, but I think they use a lot less salt than other brands or something. Maybe this isn’t a big deal since draining vegetables and adding water isn’t really that much work. But, once again, this is a discount brand so you wouldn’t expect something like that.
I may not be sure where my parents bought this particular brand of sweet peas but you can be sure I’ll be finding out as soon as possible so I can stock up on other kinds of canned vegetables.
