From the time period of 1945 up until the present, Saudi Arabia has gone through many social, economic, and geopolitical factors that although causeing problems for a while, were handled by the Saudi Arabian government. Being that the country’s national faith is Islam, everyone there including the government abide by the Sharia – the laws and the rules that all Muslims must follow, the nation used to be an absolute monarchy. Everyone in Saudi Arabia is expected to make the journey to Mecca and Medina as stated in the Quran which is where the Sharia comes from. Saudi Arabia employs as many foreigners because there are not many citizens who have the skills to do the job that needed. Although there was an issue where Saudi Arabia was in a type of recession because oil prices had dropped to have a low in pass years, they are now seeing an increase in the production of oil revenue.
In Saudi Arabian society there are many laws that have been set up by the government in order to keep peace within the country and along with the Sharian guidelines. This is a country where the voting age is twenty-one years of age, and where only men are allowed to vote, Alcohol is completely prohibited within the entire Arab nation. Not only are women segregated in the work field from their male counter parts, but are also not allowed to drive on any public streets. However a few years ago, Mohammed Al Zulfa – a council leader within the government and a man, has advocated for a woman’s right drive, but the idea he presented which would allow certain women to be allowed to drive was refuted and deemed unsuitable. There are still some efforts to try and get the ban against female driving lifted, but the government seems stern in their standing. King Abdullah the new King of Saudi Arabia, did something that no other Saudi Arabian King has done by electing a female be in charge of the education of women. A large issue that Saudi Arabia deals with, is its AIDS situation where individuals who have this disease were shunned and seen as “sexual deviants”, and because of that hid their conditions from other people. However as the Saudi people as well as the government because aware of this, they have now been offering free medical care to those who have the disease and everything for the Arab people is free in the treatment. Homosexuals who contract the HIV disease are looked upon by society as the lowest people who have committed a sexual crime, there are those who contract the disease another way by birth perhaps in those are not shunned like the ones who contract the disease sexually. Saudi Arabia was criticized the United States after 9/11 because United States believed that the Saudi Arabians funded Osama bin Laden. In Saudi Arabia person is operating within the media practice self-censorship because they know anything said against the government is unacceptable and punishable. The Ministry of Information effectively supervised all periodicals through the Press Law of 1964, which also do not deem advertisements have publicly moral. If writers or reporters are caught slandering the government they are and have been punished, these punishments range from being fired, suspended, or even detained. People in Saudi Arabia do not have the pleasures of enjoying the movie because there are no movie theaters in Saudi Arabia. A few years ago there was a conflict between the Shias and Sunnis because both sides had differing interpretations Islam. The Shia makes up only about 5 percent of people of Islam, while the rest are Sunnis.
The Saudi Arabian economy has not always had a very stable standing because before the people had to rely on their livestock and agriculture in an already dessert like land, but now it is due its extremely large oil reserve which has brought the nation wealth and prosperity also allowing the nation to not tax its residents, offer free education, and also have free healthcare for everyone who is part of their country the health-care budget alone is 16.4 billion United States dollars. Saudi Arabia holds about one third of the entire world’s oil production. The establishment of the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco, predecessor of Saudi Aramco) and the oil towns around the oil fields triggered major changes in the economy of the kingdom, especially in the Eastern Province. Development of the oil fields required ancillary construction of modern ports, roads, housing, power plants, and water systems. Saudi workers had to be trained in new skills. In addition, the concentration of oil field employees and the range of services the oil company and employees needed opened new economic opportunities on a scale previously unseen by local merchants, contractors, and others. Aramco provided technical, financial, and logistical support to local entrepreneurs to shed the many support activities it had initially assumed. The discovery of oil ended the kingdom’s isolation and introduced new ways to organize the production and distribution of goods and services. The government is always aiming to increase their economical situation and make the standard of living that much better for its citizens, while maintaining the original beliefs of Islam.
King Abd al Aziz created the Council of Ministries around 1953 and it served as theprincipal executive organ of the government. The Council of Ministers had authority to issue ministerial decrees, but it had no power separate from the king, who approved all its decisions. King Abd al Aziz’s son ,King Saud was the next king of Saudi Arabia who hadDissatisfaction coming from many sources, chief of which were a few of the more liberal princes and the sons of the rising middle class educated abroad. In an effort to discourage the formation of critical attitudes, college students abroad were forbidden to major in law, political science, or related areas. In 1956 Aramco Saudi workers called a second strike, the first having occurred in 1953. Saud issued a royal decree in June 1956 forbidding further strikes under penalty of dismissal. The people of Saudi Arabia believe the United States supported Israel who had a war with Saudi Arabia. On the other hand the Saudi Arabian Government believed that having ties with the United States would be in the interest of the nation. Because of this the United States gave training and military equipment to the nation and in return the Saudi Arabian government allowed the United States to build a military base there within the Saudi Arabian kingdom. But because United States seem to support Israel, Saudi Arabia doubted the United States, but when you wreck invaded Saudi Arabia the United States and some other troops to help defend the Arab nation. Saudi Arabia also has had problems with Iraq despite the fact that they Saudis lent Iraq a large sum of money. When money from oil production started entering the nation, the government quickly went to work on improving its poor infrastructures, electrical capabilities, telecommunications, and water working lines. In terms of industrialization, Saudi Arabia is one of the most fruitful in the world.
